As some of you already know, I have a couple of lathes at the house and have been playing around with different woods and acrylics trying to come up with some different kilt pins. So far I have been semi-successful in my endeavors but, it's a work in progress to be sure.

Aside from kilt pins I thought I'd also share what we mostly do with the lathe aside from the kilt pins and chess pieces.

If you recall my 2nd kilt pin then you'll recognize the material it came from!

Anyways, just wanted to share some of what me and my wee lad, Jake, do in our spare time.

For the record, we do not wear our kilts whilst woodworking as the the wood shavings and dust are a real pain to get out of most materials and I'd imagine wool (natural and acrylic) would be a nightmare!

I have never heard of tulip wood. Tulips are flowers, right? What's going on here?

I, on the other hand see tulip poplars often, but am used to the wood being light in color as well as weight. I like. It grew that color, or is it stained?

Most of the tulip wood is lighter red to orange in places with red stripes. This was the first we had seen this red and, no, there is no stain on the wood!

Tulip poplars are trees that grow very tall and sport yelllow-orange blooms on the topmost canopy. They are hard to see but often get knocked down during a storm in the Spring. The flowers are beautiful but actually look more like daffodils set in a tulip.

The pens and woods are gorgeous! What a wonderful hobby. Makes me want to polish and stain pieces of wood for the beauty of the grains. Maybe I could make some neckerchief slides for scouts.

The tulip tree is also known as the tulip or yellow poplar and they grow all over the place around here! That piece was from a branch that fell from the neighbors tree that hangs over our yard so they were happy when we made a pen for them from it.

Great work, I make my own pens and give them as gifts. Have a nice antler one in my pocket at this moment.
I wear a Workmans Utilikilt most of the time while woodworking.
