    Sporran Project

I've had this beautiful hide lying around for a while waiting to be made into a sporran. So, this past week while snowed in, I decided to start cutting on it and this is what happened.

The hide was 10 oz leather. Not exactly what you want to build a sporran out of so I had to do a lot of skiving to get the edges thin enough and to make the gusset flexible enough to curve. I didn't get the gusset quite thin enough, but maybe in the future I'll break it down and fix those types of issues. It's a bit too wide below the cantle but not too bad for a first try.

The Cantle came from UT Kilts run by Brice Lythgoe. Some of you may have his sporrans. It was a really unique cantle so I pulled the trigger and had it in 3 or 4 days. Suddenly this project was looking like it could be done in time for our Burns Supper this weekend.

Here's a few more pics of the details. All in all I'm pleased with the results. I learned a lot from this one. I've also got a antique nickle cantle like this one to do a black sporran with so I expect that one will turn out much better with the tweaks I learned on this one.

Lots of room in side for my wallet, keys, phone, and a few other small items, and the opening is big enough to get my hand in and not be like the monkey who gets his fist caught in the jar trying to get the cookie out.

Very nice! I've not seen a sporran quite like that before, but I like it. Thanks for sharing.

Great job Steve, really like the look of that leather. I have been looking at those cantles from Bryce for some time and wondering how they would look attached to a sporran. Also like the idea of a cantle, as such, being attached to a plain leather sporran. I think you are on to something there.

Thanks Guys. This was a fun project. I'll take any tips you may offer Turpin.

I really like this cantle. It's so different than anything else I've seen out there. It's light weight, which was good in this case because the completed, empty sporran weighs 15.3 oz. But I like that the thick leather makes it fairly rigid and it won't distort it's shape when I stuff an entire haggis in it Tomorrow night

The Haggis is supposed to go inisde of you, not inside the sporran

That is one really nice job on the sporran though, remings me that I have two hunting planned that I better get started.
