Accessories for My Two Little Boys

Hello all,

I've been trying to get up the nerve to post pictures and descriptions of my boys' kilt accessories. If I manage to get this post sent properly then perhaps I'll post their Kilts too.
I made them each a set to wear to my younger brother's wedding in Calgary this past September, My brother was born a Scot and my new Sister-in-law hails from Cape Breton Island. He'd asked that my other brother, my Dad and I dress in kilts and Argyle jackets so I thought I'd dress the boys to match.

I'll start with their sporrans.





Both were made from a piece of vegitan goat hide and a recycled leather jacket. The tassles are horse hair, I used to be able to get it at Tandy, but apparently it's no longer stocked. I based the pattern on one used in a film from the Scottish Film Archive. (This film is fantastic!)

The flaps are secured with one rare earth magnet on the reverse of the front panel and another in the flap. Just leave the credit cards elsewhere.
Both of their sporran belts were made with 5/8" strips of vegitan fastened with rivets. The oramental chains and clips were taken off of ladies formal clutch purses bought at the local Sally-Ann. The scale and finish of the hardware matched better than anything else I could purchase locally.

The belts and buckles are another Tandy product.





I wanted to make them with a Canadian motife, yet subtley so. I thought big metal buckles might be a bit much for such little guys, so I carved the maple leaf in leather and set them in cusomizable buckles. The belts are pre-cut vegitan strips with a chamfered edge all around, I got both from a single 5-foot length.

Finally the sgian dubhs,





Both are carved with wood from the scrap bin. Ethan's is the brown one carved in red oak. He'd just seen the "Lord of the Rings" and wanted something in that style. He also insisted I include his newly found "Jewel", which appears to have come of a piece of someone's clothing.
Mike's is more of a military utility style, I'm not sure where he came up with it but it's carved from his plan. It's carved in hard maple. Both are dyed with the same leather oil dye's used to finish their leather work.

Those are great. The workmanship is impressive, and the scale looks perfect for children. Of course, the kids are going to outshine the adults!

Very nice work! As far as the belts go, I only saw 1-1/2" belts available at tandy and those corrosponding buckles shown. Do you know of a place where one could find a kilt belt sized set thathe could customize? Or would He have to make it himsel?

Tandy sells precut leather straps that can easily be made into belts. I do that from time to time.
