Good overview book on Jacobite uprising?
I need a recommendation for a good overview of the Jacobite uprising on 1745. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Fitzroy MaClean wrote a book called Bonnie Prince Charlie. Excellent work, I have read it twice. I know there are others, however my bookshelves are doublestacked and this is the one that came to mind. Any or MaClean's work will be void of the Victorian pomp that is found in most of these writtings.

I can't think of one off the top of my head. . .But this reminds me of one I've been meaning to check out which, as a former military intelligence and psychological warfare officer, looks to me like a fascinating overview of those particular aspects of the conflict:

"It's all the same to me, war or peace,
I'm killed in the war or hung during peace."

That would be Maclean, as in Sir Fitzroy Maclean of Dunconnel.
I'm not aware of any MacLean who spells his name with a capital "C".

Maybe it's the Scottish version of Mr. Clean. "Mr. MaClean"?

Typo attributed to good Scotch, which I must say is impressive since I did it twice. My apologies.
Sir Fitzroy MacLean-Knight of The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle.

If you are looking for BASIC information you are best served by the rounded and short Osprey books on the subject. Several good ones. The Jacobite Risings, the Jacobite Army 1745-46 and The Highland Clansman 1689-1746. But please, dont take them as gospel in all regards, they do contain a few mistakes and are some what written with a Hanoverian bias. But for what they are, they are very good and very entertaining.

There are a LOT of books out there on the subject, and I won't pretend to know which one is best.
But I did happen to pick up this one at my local Half-Price Books and I found it to be a pretty comprehensive overview of the '45 Rising. There was not a lot of fluff in it; it seemed to stick to documented facts while trying to give a good overall view of what happened and why.

Four books worthy of consideration
I will suggest four books, three of which should be more-or-less easily obtained, the fourth possibly less so.
To understand the rising of 1745 one must not view it in isolation. It was not a single event, but rather the fourth and very dramatic act of a long running play that first raised its curtain in 1708. With that in mind I'd suggest:
INGLORIOUS REBELLION, The Jacobite Risings of 1708, 1715, and 1719, by Christopher Sinclair-Stevenson (ISBN241 01903 6).
I'd also recommend
The Jacobites, by Frank McLynn (ISBN 0-415-00267-2)
and
THE ROAD TO CULLODEN MOOR, Bonnie Prince Charlie and the '45 Rebellion by Diana Preston (ISBN 0-09-474080-1).
Finally there is
HISTORY OF THE REBELLION of 1745-46 by Robert Chalmers. I am sorry that I can't supply an ISBN reference as my copy (the Seventh Edition, 1869) pre-dates ISBN. That said, I suspect that this was the sort of book that would have been in print well into the 20th century, and may very well be available today.
I hope that points you in the right direction!
