I want to find a vest

I want to find a vest to go with Maclaren tartan, but I'm just not that good with matching that stuff so second opinions are great. I'm fine with making the vest, just not so much with the design. I usually wear green kilt hose with red flashes if that helps.

I also wear Maclaren, usually ancient colours, though I am jonesing for a weathered at the moment. I have a charcoal breamar tweed jacket and waistcoat. a dark green argyll tweed jacket and waistcoat, a brown check tweed argyll jacket that I wear with a green or fawn doeskin waistcoat.
I also have a lovat green tweed argyll that I wear with the green doeskin waistcoat. Also have black argyll and prince charlie with matching vests.

As the Maclaren tartan has red and yellow in it I think you could also wear mustard or a red toned waistcoat. There is no rule, whatever you think will tone in with the colours in the kilt

You could always have one made by a tailor. Try this site to see if they have something you are intersted in. http://www.tailor4less.com/en-us/men...coat/configure

I really like the fact that you can have the bottom squared like the wasitcoats HRH Pince Carles wears with his kilts.

I like the square cut bottom as well. I think it works well with the kilt, and also works well with most jackets. If you have two jackets of different lengths they will both look right with it. Sometimes those angles at the bottom don't fit right with some jackets, but that's by my eye. Your tastes are what's important.

There are several good choices at http://www.gentlemansemporium.com, and a few at http://www.uniformalwearhouse.com. The second one has great prices, but it's not the best stuff. The vest I ordered from them fits well and it looks good. I know it won't last forever, but at about $20 plus shipping I'm happy with it.

Check out your local consignment shops and thrift stores too. My favorite waistcoat came from a second-hand store and cost me a whopping two bucks. You might have to buy the jacket too, but if it's in good shape you're still getting a good deal. I don't worry about matching everything so much anymore. I finally got out of that mindset, but I still get items that will work with everything else I have. One or two waistcoats can make a jacket or two go a lot further! Happy hunting!

I made a vest last year. I didn't even know how to sew when I started! Simplicity pattern 4762. Just get about 1/2 yard of your tartan for the front and the rest from lining, wool etc.
