Fly Plaids

Is it appropriate to wear one as part of casual dress (like over a sweater), or are they best reserved for formal functions? Also, is the plaid pinned to your shirt with the brooch, or simply pulled through the brooch after fastening it to your shirt?

Like flat caps and white hose (want to start a thread on that, while you're at it?), people are pretty split on fly plaids. My personal take is that they are simply a marketing ploy to sell a yard of tartan fabric to unsuspecting new kilt wearers for an inflated price. My $.02, forego the "fly plaid" and order a bias-cut tartan waistcoat.

Ditto what David said. To answer your question, though, they are for more formal attire, not casual wear.

Yup, in the US fly plaids are pretty much a thing you can wear as the groom to your own wedding and then keep in a closet in case Her Majesty appoints you to the House of Lords.

Depending on the size you order, the plaid might make a shawl for your bride, or perhaps a wrap to keep in the good car in case she is chilly on an autumn evening out.
