Highland Attire at the Annual Clan Macpherson Gathering in Badenoch

Greetings,

Below I have posted several photos that may be interesting to many of you. The photos depict various members of the Clan Macpherson in their Highland day attire whilst attending the annual Clan Macpherson rally and gathering in Newtonmore and Kingussie, Inverness-shire, Scotland. The photos were taken by myself (except for the two photos of the clan marching, since I was obviously marching as well!) in August 2010.

As you may observe, many individuals have their own unique tastes for their Highland attire, which in my honest opinion, is always lovely to see. The gathering also coincides with the annual Newtonmore Highland Games, so I have naturally uploaded several photos of the athletes competing there, as well as the many pipe bands and solo pipers present at the games and the rally. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Macpherson men at the games - chap (Ian Macpherson of Edinburgh) on the mobile kind of cracks me up a wee bit.

International Chairman of the Clan Macpherson Association, Shelagh Macpherson-Noble, and our beloved Chief, Sir William Macpherson of Cluny and Blairgowrie, at the unveiling of a new Scottish Wildcat relief at the Clan Macpherson Museum and House. The tartan is the Macpherson Hunting Tartan - available in both ancient and modern colours. Cluny wears a sprig of Boxwood behind a badge he is wearing on his lapel. Boxwood is one of the plant badges of the Clan Macpherson, as well as many other Clan Chattan clans.

Donald Mackintosh and Cluny's son-in-law piping at the Clan Macpherson Museum (note - the wee lad in the background on the left is Cluny's grandson, who will be Chief of the Clan Macpherson one day). Donald wears a brown and red window pane tweed waistcoat; Cluny's son-in-law wears a plain (Crail) day wear jacket in Lovat blue from Kinloch-Anderson.

Solo piping competition - fantastic looking Argyll jacket (with braided epailettes, which I prefer to the flat cloth epaulettes for the Argylls) with light blue shirt and regimental necktie.

The grey one is actually the Clan Macpherson tweed - the same colouring as in the Clan Macpherson Hunting tartan - quite a smart jacket, which may also be made with a matching waistcoat. They are only made at and available through Hugh Macpherson's shop in Edinburgh (Haymarket).

Quite right. I do not particularly like the look of a Saxon tweed jacket with the kilt, they are entirely too long and cover a good portion of the pleats, however, these two lads kind of pull the look off in a way. I think the photo demonstrates how one does not have to match their Highland attire at all - especially for day wear. I love the use of different patterns in the shirting, jackets, and neckties - the checks, tattersal, and tartan. It all makes complete sense to me and looks wonderful.

I love the mix of the patterned tweed jackets, tattersal shirts, and tartan kilts, though!

Agreed. The mix of patterns is wonderfully refreshing. Just not a fan of Saxon sport coats with the kilt.

Please do not spoil this splendid thread with senseless bickering over hats and bonnets, but in all seriousness I do make the observation that as far as I can see, there is not a single kilt wearing gentleman wearing a flat tweed cap.

Do you know, this event takes place some 30 miles from me and I have to confess that I have never been.

Quite right Jock, and perhaps you should attend one summer?! Let me know when, and hopefully I will be there and we can have splendid chat over a wee dram or two in Newtonmore.

Cluny and Sandy Macpherson of Edinburgh (an armiger - hence the single eagle feather worn in his bonnet), enjoying a wee dram at the games - both wear "Clan Macpherson tweed" jackets. Sandy also wears a royal blue necktie with the association arms of the Clan Macpherson Association, granted by the Lord Lyon in 1996 at our 50th anniversary of the clan gathering and rally.
