    Socks for formal

Okay...got a couple of formal events coming up...got the black Argyle and vest...getting a somewhat more laid back sporran...now it's on to socks.

Tartan hose are definitely not, I repeat, NOT in the budget...please...this is tough enough and I'd like to stay married for at least a little bit longer...

So, to kick it up a notch, I thought that I'd try a pair of the Gaelic Themes piper's hose...a little bit more dressy, IMHO.

So color? Black is out...too severe...leaves me with charcoal, bottle green, lovat green and lovat blue. Kilt will be either the Robertson Hunting Ancient or Robertson Hunting Muted. I was ready to go with the charcoal...sort of grey, less severe than black but still formal...but whaddaya think?

Have a pair of the lovat blue(which look green to me!) Reasonable quality and good price but you may find them a bit tight if you have "generous" calves...

It seems that red is a great way to go for formal events. I would consider Tartan or Brick Red with the Ancient and Claret with the Muted first. If I were you and decided to go with anything else it would be the Lovat Blue or Lovat Green.

I'm wondering if I should wear red hose to my brother's wedding, I'm not standing as a groomsman and think it might be too much. What do you think? Anyone else chime in too.

Sorry for the hijack, AA but it seems on topic.

    Another Option...

    AA:
I have to pretty well hold to a budget as well. I have purchased hose on EBay from W. Brewin & Co. (wbsocks on EBay) at a very reasonable cost and then gotten hose toppers from XMarks Member Sydnie of Flamingo Kilts. She does a great job and can help with pattern and color options. I recently got a new pair of hose toppers to go with my Capecaillie kilt and received wonderful compliments, I even had the occassion with my Caledonia kilt and hose toppers a Scot stopped me and told me how much he liked my appearance. Just a thought...

But they are available if you commission someone like, oh, I don't know, maybe, me to make them for you.

Anything is available if you commission someone to make it for you but then you have to come up with the money to compensate them ($$$$) for their time...not in the budget or the timeline right now, as I mentioned in the original post.

Try a black cravat, like the one Matt sometimes wears.

Red hose would probably tie in nicely with the red stripe in your Robertson.

I don't know what your budget is, but the Lewis hose are available in 4 shades of red (ancient, tartan, brick, claret). All would work: the tartan is a little on the orange (ancient) side of red. I am fond of the brick red, and claret is on my wish list.

I like their bottle green, too: it's a shade brighter than most others I've seen.

Quite the opposite...one of the reasons that I'm getting away from the black is that it makes my calves and especially my ankles look too skinny.
