Happy Independence Day...
To our Texan members of Xmarks! And this year marks the 175th anniversary!

In honour of this historic commemoration, my avatar is the Texas Naval Ensign.

And remember San Jacinto!
As part of the inscription on the San Jacinto monument reads:
"Measured by its results, San Jacinto was one of the decisive battles of the world. The freedom of Texas (not part of the United States at the time) from Mexico won here led to annexation and to the Mexican-American War, resulting in the acquisition by the United States of the states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Utah and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas and Oklahoma. Almost one-third of the present area of the American Nation, nearly a million square miles of territory, changed sovereignty."
Happy Independence Day fellow Texans!

I remember when i was in London on a tour, we stopped at a plaque that showed where the Texas embassy once stood. That's one of those things you don't think about often, but since Texas was it's own country for a bit, it would have done all the things countries do, like send ambassadors to other nations.

And now there is the "Texas Embassy", which is a Tex-Mex restaurant in London:

The cantina is located in the former offices of the White Star Line, of RMS Titanic fame. A friend of mine has been there, and liked it.

Happy Independence Day! and Remember the Alamo!
Last summer I went to a memorial for my cousin William DePriest Sutherland, my cousin of five generations ago. It was through this reconnection with that part of my family that I began wearing the kilt - in the Sutherland tartan to honor my cousin. This Sunday is the 175th anniversary of his death.
I recently found this letter from W.D. Sutherland's mother, my GGG Aunt, and it tells the story of those months in 1836 from a woman's viewpoint.

There is a nice article in Blade magazine on the 175th anniversary of the Alamo, May 2011 issue.
I have a project where I have a flag flown at historic sites and monuments. I try to get it done during special events for that site. While it wasn't on the 175th I did have it flown on March 6th. Also had it flown on April 21st at San Jacinto.

For those that attend the San Antonio Highland Games each weekend near Tartan Day, there is a wreathe-laying ceremony at the 'Mo.
