Kilted at the Metal Show
Saturday was the Rockstar Mayhem Festival in San Bernardino, CA. It was a long day with lots of people drinking, rockin' out, and having fun. I was wearing my Murray of Athol Ancient 5 yard 13oz wool kilt. A black leather sporran, no kilt pin (to ease going through security) and black socks (not kilt hose), and Converse AllStars for shoes.
I saw four other kilted gentlemen there consisting of:
- One Utilikilt
- One traditional wool kilt (who was also wearing Converse shoes)
- Two crazy looking punkish kilts with zippers and buckles. The two with the very alternative kilts were hanging out together in a group. I didn't take a camera, so, no pictures, but these kilts were different. Very baggy, as I said, a zipper in the front, and lots of little loops and pockets and such.
I had one military (Airforce) guy and his roomate mention to me that after seeing me wearing a kilt they were bummed they didn't wear theirs.
A girl came up to me and said she would love to have a kilt. Asked where I got mine. Asked where she could get one. I was wearing Rocky's USA Kilts Tee-shirt so I mentioned them, among others. My lady even mentioned the OC Scots fest to let her know where she can go to see a lot of kilts up close and in person.
I got plenty of compliments. I overheard a lot of talk as I walked around, and then the occasional fly by, "Nice kilt," or "Kilts rock," type thing. Not a single negative comment.
I had fun watching the show and showing off my kilt.

Highlights and review:
- Red Fang was awesome.
- Megadeath wasn't there... Dethklok was their replacement. If anyone knows who Dethklok is, I'd try to see them if they ever play live again. Dethklok is a cartoon metal band from the TV show Metalocalypse on the Cartoon Network. The live band was just as, if not more brutal than the TV show.
- I don't care for Disturbed's or Godsmack's music... and they were very lackluster live.
- I was told the Trivium was a great band, but they were most disappointing. They sounded out of it, the singer was off, it was all very sloppy.
- Straight Line Stitch was pretty good. They have a female lead singer who can growl like no other. She can sound pretty mean, but then her regular speaking/singing voice is quite nice.
And here are two pictures from my lady's phone:
You can kind of see my kilt in this one, we were sitting on the grass waiting for a band. Her little brother jumped across the back of the picture
And a shot of the two of us... plus proof of the USA Kilts shirt.

Ain't it a hoot!? Kilting up for gigs like this is always a lot of fun. Lots of folks see us and think, "I could do that too." Hmmm, that's how I was hooked by a caramel Utilikilts workman at a Ren Faire so many years and dollars ago....

To me it'd be waste of money to see most of those bands for me. I'd only show up to see Megadeth or Dethklok if they come for the one around here. Though I've already seen Megadeth, David Ellefson is back in the band so that'd be a plus. But I digress, its great going to shows kilted I've always had to watch out for the mosh pits though.

Cool. Love the photo-bomb from the little brother. That's the sort of thing I do (still) and I'm old enough to know better...

Nice! Sounds like a great show. I love outdoor shows like that where you can chill out on the grass.

Hey Droid
Seems as though we may be cut from a similar tartan so to speak. :-)
DethKlok...what can I say? Best cartoon band ever?!?! Im hoping that my daughter having watched more than a few episodes with me has only enhanced her personality :-)
Red Fang....I have met those guys when they opened up for Blue Cheer a few years back, and, they are from my home town Portland, Oregon.
Check out their youtube video ´Prehistoric Dog´ Everything in that vid was filmed within 3-5 miles of my house :-)
First big show I went to kilted was to see Iron Maiden in Rio De Janeiro back in ´03. I was wearing my mother-in-law produced copy of a standard black utilikilt.
Seriously...that was the largest most insane shows I have ever been to....In some cases I think I got as much attention as Bruce Dickinson...Ha ha
Anyways....
Wear your kilt proudly, but carry a big stick

Kilts and Metal = A lot of fun!!!
It's funny that all these kids with their tatoos and piercings and studded clothing and wild colored hair, come up and tell you how much you rock for simply wearing a kilt. And I'm talking about a traditional wool kilt too.

Now if you guys want "cartoon metal" you should check out POWERGLOVE!
They are definitely a gimmick band, but some of their covers work really well. How can you not like a band that mixes Hall of the Mountain King with Inspector Gadget?

I wonder how your kilt would have gone over at a Country Music Festival?
You make a nice couple, and look happy together. Must be the kilt :-)
Rock on, and roll often!
