Critique my summer wear IV/show your own
Here is my own take on the running theme.
I don't know whether or not anyone has brought up gingham shirts yet... No idea whether or not they go with a kilt (traditionally), never tried it until today.
Here is the pic I took:
I put the thing together with the hypothetical stinking-hot Highland Games setting in mind.
The pic is a wee bit dark, as I had to take the photo inside, as the weather here is not really conducive to being outside (without a jacket at least). (Holland is having a terrible summer...)
I am wearing ghillie-brogues, as I have them, and are what I would realistically wear to a games, out walking about in fields all day (I wouldn't wear my nice black dress-shoes).
The hose are wool, but a merino/possum mix, which is reasonably light, and cool compared to my other wool hose. The flashes are from the band. (working on getting some garter ties)
Kilt
Sporran is also from the band. I don't have my own day-sporran, and when I have my new sporran which I am commissioning, it would ultimately take the place of this one and my evening-wear sporran. (That's the plan anyway!)
Gingham shirt. I always roll up my sleeves in a casual setting.
Lambswool tie.
Please give comments, and please feel free to add your own pics!
Cheers,
Michael

I find it OK, especially as you chose a solid colour tie with the check shirt. Being without a belt is OK by me, it doesn't clutter up the overall picture.

I am not opposed to wearing a belt, but I agree, I think the look is less cluttered without it. I believe it's also slightly cooler without!

You look great Michael! I think Sandy and Matt have distinctly brought up the wearing of gingham shirts in previous posts, as I am well aware that they have been discussed. Yours looks splendid with the predominate green colour of your kilt. I think if the setting is appropriate, you would look just as smart without the necktie. I would wear a plain leather (black in your case, with this specific sporran) sporran strap in place of the sporran chain strap - looks far better for day attire in my eyes. Well done mate!
Me in a rather casual look - simply too hot that day for a jacket, waistcoat, and necktie!
Always an option; a waistcoat, shirt, and necktie - no jacket.
Hill-walking, summer attire - in the Scottish Highlands though, and not in the hot and humid US!
Cheers,

No need for it! I am not opposed to the wearing of a belt as well, I just choose not to do so with my Highland day attire, any longer. I will only wear a (dirk) belt if I am wearing a dirk for Highland evening attire - and that is with the belt over the waistcoat.

Thanks Kyle!
I plan to get a strap for my sporran for the purposes of daywear. Indeed looking at the pic , the strap was something that bothered me. I'm planning on a brass cantle for my custom sporran, so perhaps with a brass chain...?
Your daywear pics are great. I'm curious about what the other "old" crabbits come up with! ;)
Cheers!

Oh,
And I'm going to search the gingham shirts now. I'd been hearing plenty recently about tattersals, but haven't read anything on ginghams.

Michael: I think you look fine... The shirt is good. The Kilt is good. The socks are good. The tie is good. I wouldn't personally tuck it in but that doesn't matter. I'd loose the ghillies (only 'cause I can't stand them ) and wear stout (brown) brogues in place, but I appreciate we wear what we have. If I was buying, I'd consider a brown leather day sporran, but that's only 'cause I like brown. Oh, and the sporran chain? I don't wear chains at all now, not even for dressed up. You look good there.
Kyle: The Macpherson kilt your wearing in the highlands picture is really striking! Is it pleated to stripe? Get it on man and post a thread full of pictures. I'd love to hear more about it. What a belter! [Oooops sorry, thread hijack. Sorry!]

Thanks John!
I will experiment tomorrow with the shoes. I also prefer a leather sporran to be brown. (I also like brown shoes!)
Perhaps there is a formal alternative to a sporran chain...? Auld Crabbits? Certainly for daywear I would like to have a leather strap. For that matter, I'd like to have my own suitable daywear sporran
I'll second the request for more pics Kyle!
Cheers!
Michael
