    Knife vs Box Pleat

I've read that most box-pleated everyday kilts are made from 4 yards of material. What about knife-pleated everyday kilts? Does the knife pleating require more material (many I've heard of are 5 to 6 yards) to make a comfortable everyday kilt? or can I use just 4 yards of material to make a knife pleated kilt?

Never mind... I re-did my search and found the answer.

im not a kilt maker but i believe it all depends on the number of pleats you want, if you want a whole bunch of small very nice looking 'knifes' then you would want more yardage, but if you wanted to have a bit less fabric then you would just do less pleating. at least thats how i understand it.

i have 2 kilts both knife pleated, one with about 9-10 pleats and the other with about 20-22 pleats, both have a different look to them but are still knife pleated, you can see both in my albums.

The two knife pleated kilts I have in my control (one is mine and one belongs to the pipe band) have 29 and 27 pleats, respectively. Most of the pleats are about 3.25" deep. That's roughly 7.5 yards of material each.

I have no direct experience with box pleated kilts, but from what I've seen posted by our resident kilt-makers, 4-5 yards is about right.
