Historically inspired knockaround kilt
I picked up these two fabrics at a local thrift store. There were 2 yards each double width and the selvages matched. As I am a big guy I was worried about not having enough fabric but I believe if I do 4 inch box pleat faces with 6 total inches inside each box pleat and 10 total inches inside the pleats for the aprons that I may be able to pull it off. Also I am planning to pleat these to nothing like WOODSHEAL has had done on a couple of his kilts. I would like these two to be a little of a mix between historical and just a good knock around kilt. Do you have any suggestions?

It seems a pity not to make use of such attractive patterns.
Will you have a significant strip of fabric from the centre of the pieces?
In the past, where I have had 60 inch wide fabric I have made the under apron from strips of that, carefully matched up, and so increased the amount of fabric for the pleats and apron.
I have also done a couple of kilts where I made the under apron from a dark toning fabric, from about two inches from the visible edge, when the length was rather skimpit.

Thanks for the ideas Pleater. I have about a 6 inch wide by 2 yrd strip out of the center. I may give that a look.

Great colors. I like the idea of making a knockaround kilt. Your work may inspire me. Keep us informed -with photos.

The first fabric does not look like a twill fabric. I can't tell if the second one is twill or not. You may have a bit of trouble with the stitching using non-twill, but they're both great looking fabrics and your end result will be smashing.

I have no doubt that both will turn out well - you seen to have a golden touch when it comes to things like this!
Looking forward to the pictures.

Unfortunatly even doing this will not be enough. I have learned that I will need a minimum of 3 yards double with to make myself a kilt but my fiance will be getting a nice skirt.

Great colours! They remind me of tweeds and tartan tweeds.
