New "Tartans" ?

Far be it for me, or anyone else, to criticise anyone else's artistic endeavours. After all, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I am quite sure that the designer of these two newly registered tartans was well intentioned when he wrote the restrictions:

Written permission must be sought from the designer.

These are the new tartans:

I cannot see him being inundated with requests.

I like the design well enough but it doesn't seem very tartan-y to me. Chas is probably correct that people won't be inundating the creator with requests, at least not for making kilts.

The description is quite dense.... as though this were intended to be an art exhibition piece. Does anyone know anything about the intentions of the designer?

If there were colors in these, they might cause seizures. My guess is that the lines might create some kind of optical effect when the pleats waggle?

I like them both, especially the white on black. I probably wouldn't go out of my way or spend a fortune on a custom weave but if it was easily available in a decent kilt fabric in 13/16oz wool or quality PV I'd wear one or both. I think they are impressively striking... I suppose it highlights we all have differing tastes.

As a kiltmaker, I'd dread getting something like that to pleat,unless I was allowed to be fairly creative as well!Interesting designs, but not really all that easy to make work in a kilt, but if someone was to challenge me to make a kilt , I'm game!

So instead of a fashion tartan trying to look "official" its an "official" (i.e. registered) tartan dedicated to fashion?

I agree, the design is attractive enough, and, despite the overly elaborate and philosophical descriptions, fairly simplistic. As I get older I find myself gravitating to more color, and less black. Although I have to say, I do love a nice heathery charcoal grey:-)

Very interesting. I might be persuaded to wear one, but not around anyone who was drinking. It makes me dizzy just looking at them.
