One word - Dheiro ?
Hello all,
Could anyone give me a quick translation of the word 'Dheiro'?
I believe it to be the name of a large house or the name of the estate. Various of my wife's family were born at Dheiro, Tongue, Sutherland. I know Tongue to be a small hamlet (two men and a dog).
So does Dheiro actually mean anything or is it just a house name like 'SeaView'?
Regards
Chas

I get your inference. "Two men and a dog" is a turn of phrase and in British English refers to a small place. "One horse town" is another option. "Two houses and a church" or "Two houses and a pub" are others. I don't think Chas meant anything smutty.

Chas, had a look for the name on lots of old ordnance maps of the area and have gone to the statisical accounts of the Parish of Tongue. This site may help you http://stat-acc-scot.edina.ac.uk/sas...and&pagesize=L
I haven't had time to go thru the whole document. Good luck with the search

Thanks for the link. I've only given it a quick scan so far and haven't seen any reference to Dheiro, but I shall continue. There does seem to be a great deal of 'sucking up' to the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland (Countess of Sutherland) - she of the clearances fame.
