Consecration Sunday
The Episcopal Church that I attend is having their annual festive Consecration Sunday meal after worship service on November 20. As I always wear a kilt with a suitable kilt jacket to Mass, I'm wodering if a black Argyle jacket with silver buttons and five button waistcoat with matching buttons would be too much or if I should just wear what I always wear?
Thank you for the advice.

Re: Consecration Sunday
What are others wearing, meaning what level of formality will be observed by others in attendance, or what does the church expect, these would be my considerations before choosing an outfit.

Depends on what time of day. I would go for tweed for day time and black for evening.

McMurdo,
I can ask around at Mass tomorrow but I'm pretty sure it will the same as any other Sunday,
as long as it's clean and not stained everything from t-shirts and jeans to suit and tie is worn to Service.
Chris,
It will be after morning service which starts at 10am so a nice tweed would be preferable then.

Given that I'd stick with a tweed jacket.

Yeah, even without the waistcoat and just worn with an Oxford shirt and tie the Argyle would probably still be too much.

Alright I am not an American and I am no expert on what to wear to church anyway, but a silver buttoned black argyll is for formal day wear. If you can, go with a tweed argyll.
In Kilt attire terms the tweed argyll is a suit equivalent, although your moth eaten, much darned, peat stained, threadbare argyll is perhaps better suited to gardening and BBQ's. Although I have on more than a few occasions seen a distinctly tatty tweed argyll at quite smart events and no one has batted an eyelid!

Re: Consecration Sunday
In Scotland there is a long tradition in Church of Scotland (Presbyterean) churches that the Elders dress formally in black jackets and striped trousers although Edinburgh is fast becoming the last of the churches following this tradition. Whilst there is no similar tradition in Episcopal churches I really do not think it would be out of place to dress more formally, in spite of others dressing down, and a black Argyll jacket can be worn SEMI formally
I would think it is absolutely fine for you to wear whatever you want and I can see no objection to the Argyll if that is what you want to do. Remember, your attendance at church is an act of worship and that means presenting yourself as well as possible. In many churches that would mean your BEST clothes every Sunday

Well... at our church in London, St. Mary's Bourne Street, the church wardens wear morning dress on a few occasions. The sidesmen at the Cathedral Church of St. James in Toronto at one time always wore morning dress on Easter and certain high days. Granted, these churches are C of E and the Anglican Church of Canada and not the Episcopalian Church, but the point I am trying to make is that the kirk elders are only wearing what any gentleman in a major urban parish- kirk or Anglican-might wear on important days. When my father was Rector's Warden of New St. Paul's Anglican Church, in Woodstock, Ontario, in the mid 1960's he ALWAYS wore a morning coat whenever he was required to carry his stave.
