Tartan ID help please

So I have this new kilt (ancient color scheme)that just came in yesterday. I also have a swatch in the modern color scheme I ordered a while ago. It looks to me like they are the same sett, slighty different size.

I ordered three swatches at once from a US vendor who third partied all three (red, green, monochrome) in clan Scott modern palette from Loch Carron to me.

But I am not sure what sett they really are.

I think I either have #1826 and my eyes have looked at too many monochrome setts lately, or I have 1825 and both weavers added some extra white, or maybe I have something else entirely.

You have #1825 it's just that there is no default settig and so each weaver is at liberty to fit it to their loom/requirements.

In dealing with these black and white tartans, the difference between "ancient" and "modern" colors gets a bit fuzzy, and really most mills wouldn't even bother weaving two versions of these tartans.

Remember than an "ancient" tartan is just the "modern" woven with lighter shades. However, when this is done, it is typical that any black or white stripes will still be rendered in black and white. And anything blue, green, red, etc., will be lightened in hue.

However, what then do you do when you ONLY have black and white in the tartan?

I have seen some mills weave "ancient" versions of these tartans by using instead of black a very, very dark charcoal grey, or instead of a pure white using more of an ecru or cream color. It is hard to tell from your photo if that was the case here, but it does seem like the black used in the "ancient" version might be a hair lighter than in your swatch.

In person under good light the modern swatch from Loch Carron is starkly bright white and deep black.

The kilt has had three different identities from when I found it ready made on a rack. The seller has for the last two identifications insisted it is a Dalgliesh weave in the ancient pallete - two different setts though ;-). In person the kilt is indeed a pale ecru or eggshell and deep deep deep dark dark gray, but neither black nor white.

Neither option will hide barbecue sauce very well, but I suspect the ancient pallette might go a bit longer between washes.
