Hello from a newbie
Hello All,
My name is Steve Crotty, I live in the wine country of northern California, in Sonoma County. I've begun the plunge although I've been a little more than casually interested for many years. Long time nor Cal residents may remember performances by the Black Watch and Scots Guards at the Cow Palace in San Francisco in the late 50's-early 60's. I was a little kid then and in awe of the regimental attire, the bearskin hats and especially the leopard skins the drummers wore. I've had a fondness for pipe music ever since. Anyway, I'm of 1/8 Scots heritage on my dad's side along with 1/4 Irish (Crotty) and a little more. My dad's grandmother was a Cleland (or Clelend, or Clellend...) unfortunately 'm not sure on the spelling, and ther's no one around to ask anymore. What research I've done indicates that there is a clan Cleland (website) and a clan MacClelland (website). I've attended some games and gatherings in the last few years, most notably the Caledonian Games in Pleasanton, CA on Labor Day weekends. Last year I purchased an inexpensive kilt, in McKenzie tartan, mostly because I liked the quiet colors and because it fit me. I also purchased hose and flashes. Currently looking on line at shirts (jacobite), belts, buckles and sgian dubhs. For grins I made what I belive is an acceptable and passable rob roy style sporran as I have decent skills in leather work. Future plans certainly include more formal attire. My biggest problem is putting this altogether on me...I don't want to wear a kilt if I don't do the tradition justice. So where do I go from here? Anyone nearby?
Looking foreward to your input and advice, and in advance, thanks.
Steve

Hello Steve,
Welcome to XMarks from the other side of the world in Norfolk, England.
You will find that spelling is an adventure and not a science, so don't get hung up on it.
The other thing is, start looking here for NorCal - you will be pleasantly surprised!
Regards
Chas
