Where would you move?
I've decided that my current job is just not fun anymore. So, I've started looking at other opportunities around the country (and possibly the world). My question to you all is: Where would you move to and why?
I won't quit my current job wotout a replacement, so I don't plan to move anytime soon, but the research has to start somewhere.
I am currently looking at Eastern Washington State, Oregon, parts of Texas (San Antonio, Austin, Dallas), and North Carolina. I welcome more reasons to go to any of these places, but I am interested in other places that I may be overlooking as well.
Maybe not why I should move there, but why are you there, or why would you move there?
Weather? Job opportunities? Social or cultural activities? Open spaces? Big city or small town?

Re: Where would you move?
Belize, Ambergris Caye, San Pedro town.
I'd buy a dozen jet skis and rent them out to tourists. Bare feet, great weather, ocean breezes, fruit grows on the trees and fish swim round right off shore.
Probably not much help for you and your situation. But when my wife has finally had enough, that's what I want to do.

Re: Where would you move?
Eastern Washington-
4 hours from Seattle / saltwater, etc.
<1 hour to Idaho
2 hours to Montana
2-3 hours to Oregon
2-3 hours from Canada (Several Points of entry.)
Close to Washington wine country
Definite 4 seasons with marine influence- Ave highs in 90's, lows in teens
public land everywhere-hiking, hunting, fishing.
Most guns hang on racks in your pick-up...mostly in the fall.
Very few natural disasters.
Friendly people.
Relatively low cost of living

Re: Where would you move?
I would have to say Rio de Janeiro.
My wife is a Carioca born and raised, and having been there 4 times, (once actually staying for 3 months) NEVER have I experienced such awe and enthusiasm for a schlocky yank (such as myself) in a kilt.
Brazil is a steadfast multicultural place, but is mostly of Portuguese, African, Native American, Italian and German influence.........
I went to an Iron Maiden concert back in 2003 while wearing my very first kilt... a Utilikilt copy sewed together by my mother-in-law in Rio de Janeiro...Hence my screen name Brasilikilt.
Anyways......I was greeted with an almost uncomfortable amount of attention from my fellow concertgoers...MEN! were actually asking to have their picture taken with me!?!?!?!
Anyways........Brasil is hungry for kilts and Scottish culture....
It's likely that one of these days I'll live there and bring a little more of it to them.
Wear your kilt proudly, but carry a big stick

I'm an east coast guy born and raised. I have to have all 4 seasons and a plethora of fresh seafood. Steamahs and bake stuffed lobstahs! And Nothing beats an ice cold beer with a fenway frank watching the game from the Monstah!

Re: Where would you move?
I have not travelled the world but I have worked all over the UK. I have been on holidays to Spain, Madeira island, Mallorca, Minorca, Spain, Austria, Germany, Belgium and France.
We moved to the North of Scotland 15 years ago. Almost no crime. Not much traffic, wonderful scenery and beaches. But no big cities, nearest is Inverness, 3 hours drive away.
I would not live anywhere else and I do not like a hot climate.
Chris.

Re: Where would you move?
Although raised a midwesterner and back in the area (Louisville) I don't think I would stay here if not for the great job and being close to family in their twilight years.
As my other passions are snowboarding, flyfishing, cycling, hiking, travel and photography I think my "where would I live if I won the lottery" place would probably be the mountains of Colorado, Wyoming, or Utah, possibly as far north as southwestern Montana or as far west as the Reno-Tahoe area. But the only way I could make a decent living in any of those places would be to work by computer remotely and on off hours---not the most pleasant of employments IMHO.
If money and employment were absolutely NO factor I might seriously consider moving to the Fife region of Scotland---great golf, beautiful scenery, and only a couple hours away from the opportunities o do all those other things I love, as well as wear a kilt without sticking out like a sore thumb.

Myself, I'd go back to Scotland. The only thing stopping me now is this bloody stupid french income tax system.
I've travelled quite a bit in 31 years military service and in my travels I've found places that I could easily live in but, like the saying goes, there's no place like home.
Someone mentioned Belize? I've lived there (for 6 months, back in the 80s). Nice place. A bit warm. The Cayes are like paradise. I went to San Pedro, as well. I think I prefer Caye Caulker, though. I had a great six months, but I don't really think that I could live there. It would be a very laid back life. Ok if you want the shorts and T Shirts kinda life. Don't even think of taking Scottish Highland wear there, unless you have a refrigerated room (cold storage) to put your kilts in. High humidité, coupled with high temperatures, just rots wool over there.

Re: Where would you move?
If I could I'd have a home part of the year in Tuscany, close to Florence, and spend the other part of the year in the area of Argyll between Crinan and Kilmartin. However, (despite missing Scotland and 'my ain folk'), I live in a very nice part of Massachusetts within a block of a beach on the Atlantic coast with the two most important people in my life, my wife, and wee boy.
Temperamentally I am inclined to value what I have, and not worry about what I don't. In the words of the saying 'my cup is half full not half empty !'
