the most faded kilt ever??

Take a gander at this kilt from Ebay.

I've seen loads of 30 year old very faded band kilts around here, much discoloured by decades in the California sun. (A band here bought lovely British Columbia kilts back in the 80s, the vivid red of which has faded to a dingy pink.)

But this one has to take the cake!

Look how the MacKenzie Seaforth tartan is recognisable at the top, but at the bottom is so faded as to become an entirely different tartan

Do any of you have photos to share of very faded kilts?

I like the way the bottom looks ,if it all looked that way.

I wonder is there a way to fade a kilt with out damaging it ,and makeing it
look the same all the way through. ie... Moderon to wheathered

A UV lamp and time might work... No guarantees what you might end up with fromodern dyes though...

I beleive Matt once posted a faded one with the modern colours still showing in the pleats that looked nice...

That does a very good job of convincing me that the weathered maclean hunting by locharron is accurate...

Heh, I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps the weathered (or "reproduction") colours are pretty accurate after all! Some people, like myself, pay good money to order custom weave tartans for precisely that look, although we like it to be uniform across the whole kilt.

I'm curious about the strap on the kilt, though. Looks like it's installed backwards? The billet end points to the front of the kilt, which I assume would mean that the buckle is on the tab attached to the apron. I've never seen that before.

Thank you Matthew for the photos. Wearing the kilt any time at any occasion will be the best way to get this beautful weathered colours. Very interesting the dark original pattern in the pleats and inner apron. I hope my favorit kilt will get this look in following years. So wearing, wearing, w......

Precisely! I am looking forward to my next kilt, a Barb Tewksbury 8 yarder, knife pleated to the line, in Dalgliesh's heavyweight Macpherson Reproduction (weathered) colours! Jonesing big time!

Yes, Kyle, me too (though mine is reproduction Colquhoun, plus a lot of extra yardage). I think you and I are two of the people who ordered reproduction tartan kilts from her at about the same time, and will be amongst the first to take advantage of DC Dalgliesh's new line of standard double-width cloth in this colour scheme. I've been taking daily anti-Jonesing pills in an attempt to stave off this dreaded symptom.

No offense, my friend, but I'm hoping mine comes before yours does!

Yes, I believe you are correct! Your new kilt will arrive before mine, Tobus, as I haven't instructed Barb to begin making mine yet. I have a few more pounds to lose, well 'extra baggage' that I know I will lose very quickly (one of the rather brief side effects of being a newlywed and having a wife that loves to cook!), so naturally my waist and seat size will change - more than likely to the precise size of many of my other kilts, but I do not want to take the change, so I am waiting until the spring to submit my kilt measurments to Barb. She kindly agreed with my unique request, and my D.C. Dalgliesh tartan is on standby with her, ready to be made into a fine kilt.

I am looking forward to seeing how your kilt turns out, especially with the new Colquhoun reproduction colour scheme (I think you and I share similiar preferences in regards to Highland attire, specifically Highland day attire, and are quite fond of 'earthy' tones in checks, hosiery, tweeds, and colour schemes). I will be doing the same with the Clan Chattan tartan, as presently, this particular sett has only been designed in the ancient and modern (standard) colourings, and not in the reproduction (weathered) colours. I plan to have a custom weave (late summer-fall 2012) of the Clan Chattan sett done in the reproduction colours from D.C. Dalgliesh - this will be the first of its kind as well!

Hang in there mate, and keep taking those anti-Jonesing pills! Lord knows I will need another prescription!

It must use the old "belt" fastening where you have a belt (and not a strap) sewn on the under apron which then goes through the normal "buttonhole" on the left side of the kilt all around the outside of the back of the kilt and then through a buckle on the right hip finishing, like this one, with the belt "pointing" forwards. It's an old system, not used very much nowadays.
