Las Vegas Rugby 7s 2012

I made the four hour drive to Vegas for the USA Sevens tournament.

Here I am with a fellow Scotland supporter, sharing a dram before the matches began

They let me bring my pipes in, and I piped during Scotland matches.

Not all that many Scotland supporters, and they were scattered about the stadium. There were hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Fiji, USA, and Samoa supporters.

I spied this group of Wales supporters, in matching sheep hats

The weather was lovely! Warm in the sun, but cool when clouds passed over.

A wonderful event but not good for Scotland, especially the loss to Japan.

Wow!!!.... I wonder if the Stanford team went down to watch. I know a bunch of ladies on the womens team, here.

From what I understand, the Canadian mens and ladies reigned supreme.

Was planning to go, but then my kid's university tuitions got raised and--POOF--there went the trip. Oh, well, next year. And NBC did a good job televising the international matches on their sports networks. Vegas, rugby and a dram, what could be better?

Certainly a tournament that is not well known here in Scotland but the 6 Nations is on just now and all the attention is on this tournament.
Although by the look of your wonderful pics, the weather is better than the snow we have in Rome and Paris for the 6 Nations

The atmosphere was fantastic, with all the supporters from the various nations in all their crazy costumes.

Quite a few USA supporters were dressed as bananas... I haven't a clue why.

The famous USA "bunny girls" made an appearance.

One group of England supporters was dressed as Beefeaters, while another group of Englishmen were wearing Hawai'ian shirts, straw hats, flip-flops, and were carrying nude female inflated dolls.

One thing that all the supporters had in common was a LOT of drinking!!

It's the closest thing to the atmosphere of a World Cup that can be experienced here on US soil, I suppose.

About the sport itself, it seems to me that 7s is perhaps the ideal type to be introduced to Americans unfamiliar with rugby.

(And many Americans are VERY unfamilar with it... when I told one co-worker that I had gone to a rugby tournament in Vegas, he thought I was talking about rugs.)
