Frock Coat with Kilt
I just came across this Austrian tailor who makes kilts but in his galleries he has some examples of Kilts with frock coats. Its quite an interesting look. But I'm not sure if its a case of looks good in photos not so much in real life. What thinks the rabble?
here's one example:

Re: Frock Coat with Kilt
Meh, I may work with the right coat, but I'm not a fan.
Kilts, because some men need the extra room, and some men wear pants.

Nae too sure about the look in the photo... I think that the coat is a bit too "straight" down the sides and the upper pockets dont really set off the look.
However, not owning an inverness cape I occasionally wear a frock coat with the kilt. My one is a simple black affair and is more "classic" in its cut than this one. In my opinion it looks fine.
cant locate a photo at the moment but I may be able to ifnd one in the depths of my hard drive.

Re: Frock Coat with Kilt
I absolutely will defend the right of anyone to wear whatever they wish, but a frock coat with a kilt is ridiculous. It ruins the "Scottishness" of the kilt and looks daft.

Re: Frock Coat with Kilt
Just toured the website a bit and there are a few more variants of coats and vests and other styles worn with the kilt in both modern as well as more traditional formats. The frock coats for the most part don't work with me because you only see a few inches of the front apron, and then only when the whole coat is either cut to show it as well as the whole front of the upper torso of the model or held open to show it, while the rest of the kilt is covered to or below the selvedge. There is a tailcoat that might work as most of the kilt is visible although still a lot of the pleats are covered. He has some tyrolean/bavarian variants of the kilt coat with different styles of collars/lapels---standups, short cutoff lapels, etc...--that might be interesting looks as the lower parts work better with the kilt. There are several traditional coats and some more modern coats with traditional Braemar sleeves and buttons. Some of his vests similarly look a tad long for the kilt.
What I do like is the spectacular variety of sporrans shown on the site, many exotic skins and novel styles, although there is a tendency to wear them quite low, along with low-waisted kilts and low selvedges over the knees as well.
All in all a more fashionistic approach to accessorizing the kilt---heck there is even a tartan painted SUV in at least one of the pics.

Re: Frock Coat with Kilt
I always find it amusing when vendors have the need to re-invent something.
With kilts and jackets and waistcoats and hose the there is a tried and tested and above all trusted formula. But within the guidelines the variation is enormous - a whole spectrum of colour, fabric, buttons and fit.
But when a vendor has to "put their own unique spin on a traditional garment", or "re-design it for the 21st Century", all it says to me is "we can't do it properly, so we are going to do something else and pretend".
Men have worn short coats with kilts for hundreds of years. Up pops an Austrian tailor to show us that we have been doing it wrong for all that time. Because, of course, the Austrians are well known for living in a country with a vast kilt wearing history.
I don't think I will be buying one of their coats any time soon.
Regards
Chas

I like that too.
And it has advantages. You don't see the bones in every corner, and with the amount of cloth you can't hear them rattle.
