Matching tie to the kilt
What is the feeling about matching the tie to the kilt?
I am planning a get up that will fill the bill for any occasion. The kilt Ill be wearing in the MacLean hunting modern & an argyll jacket/vest. Should go with a hunting modern or can also wear the hunting ancient, MacLean of Duart ancient / modern / weathered? I like the idea of the hunting ancient or red weathered as a way to play with shades or the color palette.
feelings?

A lot of nonsense is talked by many people about not wearing more than one tartan, or not wearing a tartan tie with your kilt. A tartan tie is perfectly correct if you wish to do that, but my personal taste is to match the tie with the kilt, if only to create some coordination.

Re: Matching tie to the kilt
Since you are wearing a vest, which will separate the kilt from the tie, you have more options. I think in this case the choice would be mostly about how the colors work together or play off of one another. I personally think that a matching tartan tie and kilt makes for a bland outfit. I would try the ancient or red weathered for a bit of a contrast; it might give your outfit more interest. Either way, it is up to what you like.

Kilt or not, when I wear a tie, I pick one that suits my mood regardless of whether it coordinates. Ducks, dogs, lobsters, chickens, stripes, nosebleeds, etc. it all depends on how elegant or frivolous I'm feeling.

Tartan works... It will likely be bias cut, but as was said a waistcoat does help break up the tartan.
Another option to consider woukd be a plain coloured one... I have a green house of edgar wool one that goes well with my maclean hunting

Re: Matching tie to the kilt
Early on in this forum Ham would counsel against it. Never wear a matching tartan tie with a kilt.
Yet I've seen hundreds post pics dressed that way over the years and it looks okay to me. I even own three hand sewn kilts with matching tartan neckties....but I've never worn them that way...more about wearing a tie than the look.
As Linda Ellerbee said, "If men can run the world, why can't they stop wearing neckties? How intelligent is it to start the day by tying a little noose around your neck?"
I "had" to wear a tie so many years for business and I've now been "free" of them for so many years, just don't wanna anymore.
But to the point - Many do it, I don't mind, I may myself, but some counsel against it.

Re: Matching tie to the kilt
As far as ties in general, I wore one for 20+ years, and after about 6 of not wearing one I'm going back to one... Choice not requirement... The fact that I'm looking for other opportunities outside the company has absolutely nothing to do with it though...
A well cut suit or jacket and a tie vs a person in a polo shirt and cargo pants... But I might have to succumb to the Engineer's stereotype and go with a tweed jacket...

In Iran they have made the necktie illegal... they are considered decadent....just a bit of useless trivia...

That's unfortunate.

Re: Matching tie to the kilt
I'd say pick a tie with the exact same tartan (so no variations. If you match bright yellow with a dull yellow it'll end up being a disgusting match) or pick a solid colour (or a tie with two of) the main colours in your kilt, or a colour that you wish to bring out (I use a red tie to accentuate the red stripe in my tartan). Hope this helps!
