The F.H.C.A.G made Panache a corduroy X Kilt and I thought it looked quite good. She's pretty accomplished with a sewing machine, though. If you've never sewn before, it might be better to start with a plain twill.
But you know, it's YOUR kilt and if you just want corduroy, then dude...go buy some corduroy!

Why not? If you like it, do it. I think it could look pretty cool.

Re: Corduroy XKilt?
It may actually be easier to make the RevK version of XKilt when working with corduroy. I made several in a high-low cord fabric for one particular client. The wales make pleating dead easy, and with the RevK layout you don't have to taper along the folded edge of the pleat. Just scootch that edge over so the next pleat is narrower. If you did that on a traditional knife-edge kilt, you would end up with what Alan dubbed "fell tilt" but the RevK construction means that the pleats tilt one way until center rear, then they tilt the opposite direction as you work away from center rear. It all cancels out and makes a good looking kilt IMHO.

I really like the RevK. Idea. Those directions are in the XKilt PDF?

Re: Corduroy XKilt?
Dave,
My lovely and talented wife who used to post on XMTS under the moniker "F-HCAG" (Flame-Haired Celtic Amazon Goddess) made a step by step photo thread of how she made a corduroy X Kilt. It was deemed important enough to be preserved in one of the information forums on XMTS and might be of use to you. Here is the link to the tthread:

Ive got a kilt started, my first hand sewn kilt attempt, and Im using organic hemp/cotton corduroy I bought on Ebay. I had enough lenth to rip it into 3 sections 54" wide each. Due to the direction of the cord I had to piece it together like this. I ended up with about 4+ yards of 26 inch long material. The sections are machine sewn at the edges but the rest I plan to hand sew. I am using Barb T's book and the additional box pleat section added by Mac Newsome (hope I didnt spell the name wrong). So far so good, it is interesting material to work with. Being solid color you dont have to worry about sette or stripe pleating. The cord gives you good lines to follow when sewing. The weight is about 14 ounces so it has a nice hang. I am making a traditional kilt with box pleat and plan to use hemp webbing for the straps. The material is a very nice cinnamon color and I plan to take the left over wool from my tank, German Heritage tartan, and use that as a decorative fringe on the apron. The gold, black and dark red will accent the edge nicely. Yes photos will be made for all to see.
The gist of this is, go for it. Corduroy is interesting to work with and I think will hang nicely and hold pleats well. I like that I can have a solid color kilt with some weight that isnt wool. I am learning alot as I go and plan for this to be the first of many traditional kilts I make out of different fabrics. Have fun mostly and photos must follow after you are done.

Re: Corduroy XKilt?
Decided not to go with cord. Maybe with the next project. But I think my first ones pretty cool, considering I've never touched a sewing machine or worn a kilt. Talk about flying blind.
