    Necktie Question

I've got a newbie question about necktie length:

When I tie a necktie to an appropriate length to wear with a kilt, I end up with a ridiculously long "tail". Trying different knots still doesn't solve all of the problem. I suppose I could just tuck the tail into my shirt but thought there might be a better solution.

How do those of you with more kilted experience (that would be all of you!) tie your neckties?

You are not alone. This is a problem that most of us will have. Ties are cut from material on the bias. Given enough time and use they will get thinner and longer. I have a couple of favourites that are now too long to wear with trousers - but they weren't when they were new.

One trick that I use is to tuck the tail end back up inside itself. Either you tie the tie and then tuck or if you know how much too long it is going to be tuck first. I have one tie with tucked tail that has a slip stitch through it to stop it coming back down.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

    Chas

Yup, I've got that problem too. Even when wearing a tie with trousers! Normal ties are just too long for me. I will either tie a Full Windsor knot to use a little more material, or tuck the tail into my trousers/kilt, or sometimes even fish it into my shirt between the button holes if it can be well hidden. Never thought to tuck the tail back up inside itself. Great idea, Chas!

Really, what I ought to do is spend a weekend shortening my ties. But that's painstaking work and I just never seem to find a weekend where I want to do it.

Tucking the tail of long ties in the shirt plaket has been SOP for a long time, I don't see a reason to re-invent that wheel. Shortening ties is certainly a good solution otherwise, and I have done it with a few of my overly long ones.

As Dr. Who says, "bow ties are cool." I'm bow tie fan. Otherwise, yes, like others I tuck the back into the kilt or through shirt. I'm often wearing a waistcoat though, so I'm "covered." I wonder if boys ties would work? Probably not for men of substance of course as the scale would be off. But for us smaller guys maybe...? I can see a Ralph Lauren classic rep stripe working out. I've often meant to check this out. Maybe the next day off.

I just switch up my knot. Half Windsor for trousers, full Windsor for kilts ... generally speaking.

AS I generally wear a weskit, I normally just tuck the end into my kilt or trousers.

My neckwear never seems too long or too short, just sometimes too tight . . . .
