35 year "jones" finally to be satisfied!

Back in the mid-1970s, as a teenager, I became obsessed with the pipes and reading about the exploits of the Scottish regiments and Highland Dress and so forth.

I've always wanted to do things myself, not watch others do them, so I got a practice chanter and began learning the pipes.

My first kilts were home-made affairs: I tried to figure out as best I could how they were made from photos, and my grandmother sewed them. We had no idea how they were actually constructed. My first kilt jackets were ones I made from ordinary suit coats I got at a thrift shop.

From way back then I have always wanted to learn how to make kilts myself, and now I'm finally going to do it!

I'm signed up for an Elsie Stuehmeyer kiltmaking class!! I'm so excited about it. With so many tartans that I want kilts from, when I needed to order fabric ASAP I was a bit dazed and couldn't decide what tartan to go for. I ordered some Auld Scotland!

BTW I would be interested to see various pleating options for Auld Scotland. I've seen it pleated to the claret stripe in the 'putty' coloured band, which in my opinion makes the back of the kilt too brownish. I was thinking about pleating to the white stripe in the pure grey band, or one of the wide claret stripes if feasible.

    Thanks! Richard

Wow good on you Richard, best of luck in your kilt making. Some things are well worth the wait.

Good for you and have fun! (although I understand Elsie is quite the taskmaster!). Pleating to the stripe may be the easier way to go but with Elsie's supervision/input, why not try going to the sett?

Hmmm... I really should learn how to pleat to the sett, shouldn't I? It's a crucial thing to learn.

However 35 years of looking at (and wearing, off and on) military kilts has caused kilts pleated to the stripe to look like "real kilts" to me and kilts pleated to the sett to look "not quite right".

Thanks for the support y'all! I'm really looking forward to this new adventure.
