    Do Mitchells wear Mitchell

I understand the name Mitchell was attached to an existing tartan about a half century ago when the US Air Force pipe band began wearing it. Since that time have folks with the surname Mitchell taken to wearing the Mitchell tartan regardless of clan affiliation?

In a word, yes. When I searched in the Tartan Register's database, the name Mitchell comes up with that same tartan (shared by Russell Mitchell, Galbraith, Hunter):

It is a handsome tartan be it modern, ancient, or weathered

FYI, be warned that not all the Hunter tartans are the same as the Mitchell/Galbraith/Russell ones (for instance the one Sport Kilt sells as Hunter is similar, but not the same as the Mitchell/Galbraith/Russell.

Rocky doesn't mention it, but USA Kilts has the Galbraith/Hunter/Russell/Mitchell tartan in PV.

    Panache,

Thanks for the photos. I have a great grandfather Mitchell and I can't place him in a clan. I thought some of my cousins might be interested in the history of this tartan and its connection to Mitchell. Also, my wife is a US Air Force brat although she is leaning toward the Air Force Reserve pipe band tartan. Thanks again for the photos.

Mitchells who trace their genealogy may find themselves in one of several clans including Ross. My question was based on me wondering what Mitchells who were unable or uninterested in tracing their genealogy were choosing to wear or how they were being steered by retailers. You make a good point, that with some effort some Mitchells may be able to find the clan of their ancestors, such as Ross.
