Kilt Maker Review.

Hello this is my first post to x marks the scot and I have a question regarding a kilt maker and one of there products. This one to be specific I have a sport kilt now I am looking to get a wool kilt in my family tartan (The Duke Of Fife). I just don't want to spend $300-ish dollars on a kilt and get it and be unhappy with it.

Nicolson are a well established and reputable company but I have no first hand experience of their kilts. At first glance I thought the price was far too low and then I noticed it was a casual kilt using only 5 yards of tartan. If you are happy with a casual kilt then this one should be fine

First of all James, Welcome to XMarks from the Capital District of NYS.

It would help to know what continent you're on, then region, etc. There are quality kilt makers all over the place! You could at the very least maybe save on shipping...

Hello and welcome James,

Something to remember is that as an American citizen, you are not liable to pay the VAT on either the cost of the kilt or the shipping. So the £195.00 becomes £162.5 - a little bit easier to live with. But make sure you tell them at the time of purchase.

A quick ready reckoner is divide by 6 then multiply by 5 = payable price to you.

I believe that the only mill doing the tartan you want as a stock tartan is House of Edgar and they only weave it in 13oz material. The material is available to any kiltmaker. May I suggest you have a look through the XMarks advertiser sites on the forum before making a firm decision

Is the difference between a casual kilt and a non casual kilt something fundamental in the making of it or is it just the amount of material used?
