Sprorran: Measurements??

Hello, all! Looking to see if there is a general measurement of sporrans? I know that many can vary in sizes, but is there any kind of ball park of what might be a normal size? Width, height, depth?? I have a friend who is giving his first shot at making one for me. I don't own one yet but wanted to know if you have any measurements from yours or specs from any custom ones someone made for you. Any feed back or questions back to me would be awesome. Thanks!

If you go to the Scottish Tartan Museum site (link in advertisers bar at top of page) and go to the sporran section, you will find dimensions of most of the sporrans listed for sale. Depth of sporrans really depend on what style you are making. Hope this helps.

Just for the 'look' of a sporran, I would say deeper than the width by 1". Maybe 1 1/2" to 2", but anything less than 1" deeper just doesn't look right.

For mine the average size is 8" x 7", a rounder one is 7.5" x 7" and ones with fancy cantle are 9 x 7". Depth is about 1"

Sizes are going to vary greatly by style. And it's really hard to throw numbers around without some sort of context or photos to show proportions. For illustrative purposes, I made this one about 9-1/2" tall by 6-1/2" wide, with a finished gusset depth (after seam allowance) of about 2".




I'm working on one now that's for a brass MoD cantle, which will have a finished height of about 10-1/2", a width of about 7", and a depth of about 2-1/2". I'm hoping it won't be so large that it looks weird. Sizing a sporran to your body shape/size is a bit of an art that I've never seen discussed or evaluated, but it seems obvious that not all sizes of sporrans will look good on everybody. I would recommend using some paper cut-outs of different sizes, roughly shaped like a sporran, to hold in front of your kilt and try to hone in on a size that suits you.

I agree with the dimensions already given. I would add this one thought. What do want to put in it? Making it yourself you can make sure your things will fit. How many keys do you have, and is your wallet a bi-fold or tri-fold? However, we all lament one cannot put much inside. Also too much weight can be a bother. Perhaps a scrap-cloth mock-up would help decide this. The sporran in my avatar was sized to fit a checkbook, but after turning the seams it didn't fit. Best of luck.

Here is a link to a "Rob Roy" style sporran with measeurments. As mentioned measurements will vary depending on style of sporran and potentially the size of wearer. I wouldn't go with less than a 2" gussett (depth) if you plan on carrying anything in it, but that's just my opinion. HTH.
