Which which is which? Arizona tartan.

Recently, (has to have been recently because I still remember it) I came upon the Arizona Tartan... Now, when I look for that particular one all I find is one that is very green... I realize that that one is probably the official tartan for Arizona "BUT", when I found it before there was another Arizona tartan next to it that was much browner,,, I like the browner version much better considering there's not much green where I live here in Tucson.
Does anyone know of which I speak cuz it's driving me crazy trying to find it.
    Thanks tons
    Dan

If you look HERE, it comes up with three different tartans. Maybe it's the first one you're looking for?

I believe there was a pretty dramatic back story to the design and creation of the official Arizona state tartan, with two designers claiming theirs was the official one. I do believe that one was eventually sanctioned/proclaimed by the legislature, but the other (the brown and green) is more popular....I think that's how it went.

Are we mixing up the Arizona tartan with the New Mexico tartan ambiguity? In the case of NM, there was an issue with whose is "official" and there's some hard feelings (at least from 1 side) about the other tartan existing:

I ask b/c I always mix them up with the Arizona one as well.

Opps! I think you are correct Rocky, the issue I described is regarding the NM tartan. Sorry for adding any confusion. The Arizona tartan that I have seen is a nice brown and green tartan similar in colloration to O'neil . I believe there are some photos around of one of our former members in that tartan, and I would be surprised if Riverkilt doesn't have a kilt in that tartan too. If I had any skill at all in using the search function on here I would get them posted.

    Thanks for the correction.

Thanks for the replys. Yes the two different styles I was referring to were on the link that BCAC supplied and I went and looked at the New Mexico tartan also and think my eyes might actually recover one day (it's very bright)...

To my knoweldge, there are only two Arizona tartan kilts, one of them a Matt Newsome creation for the late Craig S./"Retro Red" of our forum (may light perpetual shine upon him). The other is Ron's kilt.

Red's Arizona kilt is currently owned by my father (an Arizona native) although sadly, it is too small to fit him, even after he lost a good deal of weight.

Here is Matt's blog article from 2006 about the AZ tartan kilt:

There is only one Arizona tartan. It's the first one on the list.

The other two are not state tartans at all. The second one listed, "Arizona Jones" (Indiana's cousin?) is for those of the surname Jones living in Arizona. The third, "Murphy and his Gang (Phoenix, Arizona)" is a personal tartan for use only by Mr. William R Murphy and his family. He just happens to live in Arizona.

So as far as the Arizona state tartan is concerned, there is only one.

There is actually slightly more green than brown in the design, but if you are looking at just a swatch of part of the tartan, it may look more brown than green, or vice versa, depending on what part of the tartan you are seeing.

I do so love this tartan. Dr. Smith did a great job of design. Red had his custom woven through Matt. I had mine custom woven by D.C. Dalgleish. Mine was sewn by Kathy Lare who busted her hump trying to find if there was stock material anywhere. No joy. She knows Dr. Smith well and even he didn't know. I'm pretty sure the Caladonian Society in Phoenix uses this tartan for their band but we didn't locate any stock of material available for sale. Maybe I should google around for a pic of the band.

There is a significant and noticable difference in the color hues between Red's material and my Dalgliesh material. But both are beautiful. I've seen Red's in person and know the colors on the photo above to be true to his - at least on my screen. He had his sewn to the stripe, I liked mine to the sett.

Even though the colors came out "different" neither is "wrong" and both are most pleasing to the eye. I find myself choosing to wear the Arizona tartan frequently - just because its so pretty and, for me, captures the beauty of the state so well.

And last pic is Red's pleats

So, if you want one you now know two kiltmakers who can get you an Arizona tartan kilt custom woven and hand sewn.

Over and over "X Marks is not responding" so I can't edit my error above. Obviously, my kilt is also sewn to the stripe. I had it sewn that way because Red's looked so sharp sewn that way
