Pipe Tobacco favorites

So had kind of a random question to all those pipe smokers. Everyone who has had a grandfather that smoked one knows how good it smelled. My question is, what are some good tobaccos like that. I have been looking around for some good ones and have found a few local ones but nothing like what i'm looking for. Suggestions?

I've not been smoking my pipe for quite a while, but here are a few favorites:

1/2 Sam Gawith's Full Virginia Flake, 1/2 Sam Gawith's Best Brown Flake

Rattray's Dark Fragrant

Esoterica Penzance

Presbyterian Mixture

Greg Pease's Caravan

Frog Morton (the original)

I also have a nice selection of Cornell and Diehl tobaccos. The "factory" is here in town and it is a real treat to have been given a behind the scenes tour. Exceedingly nice folks and great tobacco! Their Maltese Falcon is quite nice.

Difficult to answer your question without knowing what you can obtain in Alaska. My experience has only been with English blends or the occasional Danish.

"Erinmore" used to be my thing, I am not sure if you can still get it. I use the tins to carry various bits of fishing tackle in and just occasionally, even after many years, I get a brief whiff of the tobacco when opening the tin. Wonderful!

Yes Erinmore is still around Jock, it's available at a lot of high st shops and its the one I smoke if I can't get to the tobacconists in Southampton. Some other favourites would be Petersons Connoisseurs Choice and Rattrays Old Gowrie. Funnily enough Rattrays also make a Jocks Mixture although I have no idea what that's like.

Jock's Mixture is a Latakia blend. made of ready rubbed Virginia, Black Cavendish and Latakia without flavouring.
Did you know, that all Ratrrays are made in Germany from a blender in a small town near Hamburg? They acquired the name rights and recipies several years ago.

BTW: a tobacco dealer in Germany, who is a fly fisher, has a series of blends named after flies, one of them is called Jock Scot.

Another you could possibly try as it gets glowing reviews (no pun intended) is Shortcut to Mushrooms by Just for Him. Highly rated by American reviewers and not available over here sadly.

Yes Erinmore flake is still around... I have a little tin "on the go" at the moment. Old Gowrie and Marlin Flake are also in my pouch and worth a try but I wonder if what you are after is a pleasant "room fragrance"? If so I would try and find Radford's "Sunday Fantasy which is a high quality aromatic... on the occasions I smoke it I tend find a group of friends huddled down wind, breathing deeply and commenting that it reminds them of their grandfather!

Erinmore brings back memories, pleasant one's at that! Then I realized that the memories were about 40 years old.

This thread got me thinking about my Dad who smoked a pipe when I was a youngster. He passed two years ago. I have one of his old Erinmore tins in my tackle box. Wonderful indeed.
