While I've always liked the look of kilt pins, I've never liked wearing them. Not so much because they might snag on something, though that is a source of concern in some environments; but mainly because of the type of pin usually used to secure it to the fabric. which tends to split/tear fibers in the wool and/or leave permanent holes in the fabric.
A Scottish Baron who is a fellow member of the Saint Andrew's Society of San Francisco recently gave me one of the Society's newly commissioned kilt pins, and I was delighted to see that it has two posts on the back instead of a single long and too-thin pin. Two minutes with coarse and fine sharpening stones and I now had posts with broad blunted smooth "points" which simply push the fibers aside and, when withdrawn, leave no trace of a hole in the fabric.
It's not exactly a small pin; but I think it's very classy, and it's one I'll wear a lot!
