Funeral for Police Officer Michael Crane

Today, Riverside Police Officer Michael Crane was laid to rest. My condolences go out to his family. He was ambushed by Christopher Dorner, the ex-policeman whom the authorities have been chasing.

Related to kilts, there was a pipe band participating in the funeral procession. I'm not sure which tartan they wore but they were looking outstanding. The kilts were pleated to the stripe and appeared to be tanks.

I have just been reading the other thread about the shooting of Detective Jeremiah MacKay of the Inland Empire Emerald Society.
Were the two incidents connected in any way? If so perhaps the pipe band which took part in the funeral procession were from the Inland Empire Emerald Society.

Yes. They were connected.

A disgruntled and mentally ill ex-police officer from Los Angeles, Christopher Dorner, went on a vendetta against the police. He killed two police officers and two innocent victims. It all culminated in a state-wide manhunt and a shootout in Big Bear, California, a small mountain retreat community. The law enforcement burned down the cabin where he was hiding rather than apprehending him alive.

He thought that he was a Robin Hood of sorts but his goals were convoluted and contridictory. His grievances were against corruption within US Law Enforcement but he was, in the end, a a very ill man who was bitter.

It is truly a tragic story from all angles. It is so sad that things like this happen. Many of us Americans are hoping that violence like this will subside and real issues like mental health care will come out of the Dark Ages and be addressed without stigma and shame so that people who truly need medical care can get it. Attitudes about mental health care in the US can at times be a bit behind much of the civilised world, I'm afraid.

The law enforcement burned down the cabin where he was hiding rather than apprehending him alive.

He appears to have shot himself once the fire began (a single gunshot inside the cabin was heard) rather than come out. Law enforcement insists that the planned tactic was to "gas him out" using tear gas; but it should be noted that tear gas and smoke grenades burn rather than explode, hence references to them as "burners". And yes, they can set easily combustible materials on fire, too.

Very true.

That has not yet been proven. They heard a gunshot inside the cabin, but anything past that is speculation. It could have been anything. I'm seeing reports this morning which indicate that his cause of death is not readily apparent, and will have to wait for further testing to be done.

But back to kilts...

I dont' want to sound like some kind of crazy conspiracy theorist... but I did see the now-redacted local CBS news footage (that has since been yanked from both the affiliate site and youtube) where there were shouts of "Burn the MF'er! Burn it!", as they were lobbing flashbangs and tear gas into the cabin.

The whole thing was a giant mess. From Dorner's rampage and shooting innocents, to the LAPD's careless response by shooting at ladies on a paper route and eventually burning a man alive in their zeal.

There were zero winners in this altercation.
