How many kilted are there?
I bought my first kilt a little over 10 years ago. Thankfully for the Internet finding an online source was easy, though no where as easy as it is today it seems. Today a simple search online reveals a plethora of shops in everything from traditional to alt wear. My question, and please let us be honest, what percentage of people own/wear kilts? And I count everything from utility to full dress. Is it a fad only? I bought my second kilt from Kilt This about 1 month after they opened with a sewing machine a pattern and some clothe, today they have a full shop have moved into bigger quarters twice and now make kilts full time, so obviously there is a demand. But for all that (and the numerous other kilt stores popping up/expanding) I have only ever seen 1 person other than myself (aside from festivals) in a kilt. Why? Thank you all for your input.

With the wide range of kilt choices, the availability of many kilt price points, and Internet fueled accessibility, I'm fairly sure there are more kilt owners now than at any other point in history. Nonetheless, I'd also venture to say that for the vast majority of us, the kilt is event and activity specific clothing, as opposed to everyday attire.

Percentage of what people, specifically? Scots? Americans? All people around the world?

Well, everyone's circles differ, but I frequently see other folks in kilts of all kinds outside of the typical kilt 'venues'. Anywhere from formal balls to the shopping mall. And for every regular kilt wearer I run into, I meet a few guys that claim to own one; "should've worn my kilt" etc..
I've no doubt that there are more kilt owners now than ever, but most kilts are still reserved for safe 'kilt-centric' enviroments like games or Burns nights. But I know I'm seeing more and more out and about as daily wear every year.
I think a equally interesting question is how many kilts get sold every year by the bigger vendors?

Most Scotsmen own at least one kilt although in most cases it is only worn on special occasions.
I live in a row of four houses and own a collection of kilts.
My neighbour on one side owns two kilts.
The neighbour on the end house owns one kilt.
The neighbour on the other side I have only seen twice wearing a kilt, I do not know whether the kilt was his own or was hired.

There are two types of males who wear kilts -
Adults, who wear it by choice and they number, One million, nine hundred and ninety eight thousand, two hundred and seven (1,998,207).
And
The rest: the military, pipe bands, young boys and teens and finally those told to do so by their brides. These have not yet been counted as their number is constantly changing.
I will leave the very basic maths to you.

I can only guess, but in this part of the Highlands I doubt if 25% of the male population own a kilt.

In my neck of the woods very few men own kilts. Even fewer wear them unless it is a Scottish-specific event (except for a few Irish exceptions...which still boggles my mind).
I never, EVER see MUGs. Only traditional-styled kilts on the rare occasions that they are seen...often with white hose (shudder)...worn at jeans height...below the knee. One young man was SAGGING his kilt at a parade I saw a few years back!!!

I am sooo glad that sagging is going out of fashion.

Just a guess on my part, too, Jock, but perhaps a bit higher than 25 percent from Beauly to Nairn and north. I'm living in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia right now and I would think upwards of 3000 adult males own kilts here.

Sounds about right. And if they do, typically wear their kilts for special occasions.
