First Kilt!

I have finally purchased my first kilt. It is a nice light economy one for now while I save for a hand stitched wool one using the correct tartan. I chose a Marine Corps pattern since I rate it and I liked it.

I do have one question though.

I am weaving my own sporran chain and was curious on the length. All the pictures I see of them go from the sporran to over the hips and to the lower back. It seems to me that the length would be larger than the hip diameter.

How does the sporran chain connect in the back so as not to allow it to fall off the hips?

I did not have enough this round to buy an actual kilt belt so I am using a black leather one I had. I have been doing some research and I think what I am missing is the sporran loops on the belt.

Is it feasible to just punch holes in the belt to link my sporran chain to or is that a bad? Should I just use loops?

There are different options on how to wear a sporran.
One is with hangers that attache the sporran to the kilt-belt.
A second one (the most common one I think is with an extra sporran chain or strap.

Hangers and chain are normally attached to the D-shaped things seen on http://www.wyvernleatherworks.com/sporrans/ at the bottom of the page where you see a sporran from the back.
Sporran chains are the chain part that are attached to the D-shaped things as seen before. These chains are buckeled together behind your back with to leather straps (sporran chain)

Ok so there are loops, or hanger straps rather. Ok that is what I was hoping for. I can make me some out of chain and go that route then.

Just as a precaution, make sure that there are no sharp edges cause they might damage your kilt.

And yes they do look nice.

If you are making yourself a day/casual sporran I would steer clear of chain for the sporran belt. I would just use a thin leather belt, say 15mm wide. Saves any wear on the kilt and alleviates the need for the D rings at the rear of the sporran.

It's quite common to feed your sporran chain / strap through the belt loops on the kilt .

Be careful if using chain, if the links aren't soldered the unfinished edges can abrade or shred the fabric. Leather sporran belts are much kinder to the kilt and for day wear look more appropriate in my opinion.
