Hose Patterns and options
Hi,
I've decided to get some diced hose to wear with my
kilt for dress. Given that I'm wearing MacGregor and
that diced red/black is effectively MacGregor red and
black tartan (AKA Rob Roy) I thought that diced red/
black would be a good choice. But I'm thinking that
tartan flashes would be a bit much. So black flashes
seem like the better option. (Maybe red.)
What do others think?

I definitely think solid color flashes (either red or black) would look far better with diced hose than tartan flashes.

I'm with Matt. Go for a solid colour. You might also wish to investigate garters rather than flashes. I think they generally look much nicer with fancy hose.

I'd be tempted to go for a flash of a different colour, perhaps a yellow/old gold or perhaps green. Sometimes a little accent of colour helps to show off the other colours in the outfit, and then there isn't any chance of a mis match of red if it's not quite the same. I'd also concur with leaving the tartan flashes for another time.

You might enjoy seeing a picture of The MacGregor in his wedding clothes, along with some discussion of MacGregor tartans, neatly consolidated on Matt Newsome's blog page here: http://blog.albanach.org/2006/05/macgregor-tartans.html

If I may, without hijacking the thread, what are the thoughts about
ancient/weathered tartan colourings? The MacGregor does not
seem to have much time for them. But, alternatively I ran into
a Scottish born MacGregor in full Prince Charlie kit at this year's
Aussie National Folk Festival. (He'd been to the Heritage Ball)
And he was wearing a MacGregor Ancient tartan. So clearly they
are being worn, and by Scotts.
Thanks for taking the time to talk.
