Crofters and Sharecroppers

I have a question.

Sharecropping is an old-styled system of tennant farming that was found throughout the American South during the Post-Civil War era.

Crofting was a tennant farming system found in the Highlands from the time of the clearances.

(Yes, I am aware that sharecropping has historical precendence elsewhere in the world and also dating back to antiquity.)

Here is the question part:

How were the two systems similar and how did they differ? Is modern crofting (dis)similar to the historical practice?
