    Matching

If you are wearing a jacket and waistcoat/vest which are not part of a matching set, how concerned does one need to be about the buttons matching?

You are overthinking this, in my opinion, I wear non matching jacket/waistcoats all the time, and never give it a thought

I had a colored waistcoat with silver buttons which went well with a navy or black Argyll jacket with similar buttons, but seemed awkward with a tweed jacket with horn buttons. Am thinking about converting a suede leather vest to wear with a tweed jacket. I'll keep its plain plastic buttons as they seem non-combatant and not worry about matching.

Honestly it does not matter wear what you like how you like so if it feels right to you do it. Most of the 'rules' about what to wear and how to wear it were devised by the Victorians. So my fellow Scots and I tend to do what we want. Each ta thair ain.

I would not mix silver buttons with plastic or antler, as that seems to clash between levels of dress. But other than that, as long as the buttons aren't too obviously different, it's no big deal. Especially if the waistcoat and jacket are different materials.

I have to agree with this, but specify only silver/shiny metal buttons. Pewter buttons or antiqued brass, for example, work well with horn/wood/plastic/cloth covered buttons.
