Hunting fly plaid with standard kilt?

I was reading this article ( http://www.glimpseofscotland.co.uk/k...cts-and-myths/ ) and it said this: "if you are wearing a standard clan tartan kilt you are permitted to wear the hunting version of the same clan tartan for your fly plaid". This seems to go contrary to everything I've read on here. Any thoughts on this? I know I would hesitate at this idea.

My understanding is you don't mix different clan or district tartans, but a plaid of a different tartan from the same clan is sometimes used. I believe there is one regiment that does this in one of the uniforms. I'm sure our experts will chime in.

The article is very simplistic however in this particular instance I have no idea what the justification is for such a claim which is historically nonsense. The Fly Plaid is a late 19th or early 20th century 'cheat' to effect the look of the belted plaid with a modern sewn kilt. There is no evidence of an 18th century plaid being made with more than one tartan and the idea of a fly plaid of a different tartan from the kilt is peculiar to say the least.

Jock, what the OP is talking about, I believe, is the wearing of a kilt in a modern tartan and wearing at the same time a fly plaid in the hunting version of the same tartan. The wearing of "Hunting" MacOnion and "Modern" MacOnion at the same time, if you will.

    Oh I see! Thank you.

In that case then, no toes will be trodden on should one choose to wear that combination.

It is permitted only if the tartan is an Ancient Modern Hunting type.

And only if it's Ancient Modern Hunting MacOnion... not "MacOnion Ancient Modern Hunting."

The fly plaid seems to be simply decorative, or to identify the groom at a wedding and the like, but a long plaid is a handy item in inclement weather.

I try to go to the Sidmouth Folk Week as often as I can, and although it is at the beginning of August sometimes it can be very wet and quite cold at night. I take several long plaids - I make them from fabric left over after making a kilt. I am often outside as I drum for the morris dancing. If it should rain I can shelter beneath it and be quite warm even if it rains so hard that I am wet to the skin. Wool is very insulating, and seems to become more wind proof when wet. I usually wear a black kilt, with a black T shirt or jersey as that is the basic colour of the border morris kit, and then add a tartan plaid. It also covers the straps for the drum - required so I can move about and drum at the same time.

This doesn't help with the different tartans question, but I would encourage the use of plaids where they can be got away with.

Well no, as long as the tartans belong to the same Clan then no "harm" should be done. Clan Donald, for example, have many tartans that are not even similar in pattern, never mind the hue. There is a picture that appears here on occassion, where the various Chiefs and Captains of Clan Donald are stood together and if my memory serves there is at least one plaid that differs completely from the owners kilt tartan. Another example would be the late Sir Donald Cameron of Lochiel who's plaid tartan(Cameron) and hue often differed from the tartan( another Cameron tartan) and hue of his kilt. Not usual for sure and does look a tad strange to our modern day compartmentalised and pigeon holed world, but not at all "wrong".
