    Looking at a new sporran...

I'm leaning toward a 'simple' hunting sporran for my typical band kit. The less flopping and rattling while I march, the better.

So I'm looking at the L&M Highland Outfitter's Hunting Sporran Line.

I'm presently torn between the "Dubhag", the pebbled "Bandsman" and the "Bryson" models.

My band is a 'street' band and each member wears their tartan of choice. I'm currently wearing the Heritage of Scotland tartan and a grey uniform shirt with charcoal hose. Black ghillies and black belt are the norm, but I don't think I want to try mixing browns or any other color than black with my current kit.

Being somewhat capitalistic, I've found a deal on the "Dubhag" which makes it attractive, but I would really like the pebbling and cantle of the "Bandsman". I don't know if it's just me, but on the Scottish Tartans Museum Gift Shop webpage, it looks like the "Bryson" model has a bit 'longer' cantle and more closely spaced petals.

Any ideas, opinions or other remarks?

Josh, don't ever try to save a nickel and regret it later. If you like the more expensive one, wait and save. The sweetness of low price is soon forgotten, but the bitterness of disappointment and lower quality is always with you.

I like the Dubhag better, but that is my taste.
One point to consider is, that the metal cantle might get in the way of your belt-buckle.

That is sound advice that I wish I would follow more often myself.

    Salutations everyone,

I placed an order throught the Scottish Tartans Museum Gift Shop for the pebbled "Bandsman" #MSL-1045. I look forward to having a higher quality sporran to wear to all of my piping gigs. The kit doesn't a piper make, yet good kit will allow for higher confidence in looking sharp while playing.

Thanks to all for the kind advice.

Reminds me of a drum major we used to have many moons ago who liked to point out to some of the more, uh, casual brethren that a lot of people out there hear with their eyes.

    Cheers,

    John,

Sounds like we've had the same circle of friends at some point. You may have been at Carlsbad during the summer school season at some point, yes?
