Interesting sporran

This brown fur sporran has a metal cantle but it is brass and there is brown leather on it as well. There are also no tassels. What level of formality do you think would be best for this sporran? I'm thinking it might be kind of like a full mask or a hunting and be useful for day or evening assuming you coordinated it correctly, but I'd love to hear the opinion of the rabble who may also be able to help shed some light onto it's vintage.

As far as I can see, that's a MOD cantle. It's a very interesting sporran, and a unique use of one of these cantles.

To me, it looks a little too fancy for regular daywear, but not quite appropriate for evening wear (due to the metals used and brown leather). I'd be hard-pressed to find an appropriate role for this sporran.

Yup- it's an ex-MoD mkIV cantle with a separate sporran body attached to it (which doesn't exactly fit properly)

Look at the gap where the bag doesn't fit into the arc of the cantle- there appear to be two metal 'arms' leading down from the press studs to the bag where they are bolted on.
Also, the hinge arms of the cantle are completely outside of the bag, which does occasionally appear on hinged sporrans, but in this case just make everything that much more ill-fitted.

I wish they'd included an interior shot, as my big concern would be what they might have done to the two press studs where the metal arms drop from. It might effect how swapable
the bag would be with others.

As for the level of formality, I'd say it's definitely more appropriate for day wear than it is for formal evening.

Wow - I hadn't looked at the eBay page to see other photos. Having seen what you pointed out now, my guess is that this sporran originally was built for a completely different cantle, and someone tried to retrofit this cantle to it ...and rather poorly at that.

Best thing for a potential buyer to do is separate the cantle from the sporran body and build a new sporran for the cantle, as well as find a new cantle for the bag.

As the cantle is brass, which I happen to like very much, I would consider it a daywear sporran as opposed to evening wear. I think of evening wear metals as being silver toned, but that is just my opinion. It is a very interesting sporran and hope to learn more about it from others on here.
