What's wrong about this?
I came accross this picture on the web of a guy who I thought looked quite good

OK, he's wearing an evening sporran with day wear, but I wondered since there are so many critical kilt wearers here, if they would criticize any other aspect? (And I don't think the sporran matters. Knitted garters would have been a tad more stylish than the flashes.)

I don't recognize the tartan, but it looks like the current fashion for pipebands without the pipes, glengarry and the jacket on over the vest for travel. They typically wear a bit dressier sporrans.

Agreed.
Does the original source give an indication of when/where this was taken?

It was on this web site
http://www.squidoo.com/kilts-etc
where it is called "formal". For the serious kiltie it's not formal but it seems to me to be more smart than casual.
I thought it looked pretty good.

Cool.... I traced the image back to this website, which suggests the photo was taken at the 2008 WPBC in Glasgow:

The photographer has some other nice shots (from the same event and elsewhere): http://www.flickriver.com/places/Uni...asgow/Gorbals/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/leith/s...th/2814009994/

Thanks Tim for the larger photo. I really see little to complain about, I do agree with Jock the kilt is too low, and like Kyle I do not like those chain attachments. Overall though a good look an yes a part of a pipe band hence the sporran and black argyll jacket. One thing that I heard years ago and it may have been right here is that with traditional Highland wear the bottom button of the vest is done up, I'm not sure how proper that is but I do notice his is undone. I think there has to be some worse photos out there, again not much wrong here at all.

I was thinking it looked like a pipe band member - perhaps St. Lawrence O'Toole (SLOT)? They have changed their look a little bit every year (shirt colors, hose colors, etc.), but I think they've been wearing jackets with the chained buttons for a while.

If you swap the sporran for a leather one and change the tartan, it's almost exactly the same as our pipe band wears for many occasions. Even the tie is almost identical. We wear the chain link thingies, which do help the jacket stay in position when striking in the pipes.

With the bright buttons I think the jacket is on the very high end of day wear veering into semi dress or dress wear, so I think the dress sporran is fine regardless of the daylight evident. Yeah, kilt is too low or the hose are too high as there is little skin showing between the hose and the kilt selvedge. Agree with the jacket buttoned issue---if there is a reason, fine, otherwise, not. Sporran chain is pretty dressy, but not necessarily out of range with the jacket and the dress sporran, just at the upper end of it. Otherwise I am good with his choices of shirt, tie, hose, flashes, etc....
Overall, the look by itself is in the high 90's percentage wise, but still we need a bit more situation and surroundings and event info to really get a handle on whether he is "appropriately" dressed.
