Argyll jacket and no waistcoat. What to do?
I have a rather lovely Lovat green Argyll jacket. I've had it many years and got it for a song, and it is made from a heavy tweed of somewhat higher quality than seems to be available these days. Sadly, it didn't come with a matching waistcoat and I know I'll never get a perfectly matching one, so I'd like the rabble's advice on what sort of waistcoat might work instead.

Thanks,
Richard.

I'd go for something contrasting. A nice Claret, deep Olive or Pine Green, even a Brown would work nicely.

if the red in the kilt is a brighter red I would go with a red vest or even a dark blue one.

I think it looks great sans waist coat, but a brown or a tan waist coat would look sharp.

... and let's not forget a bias cut tartan vest. (that's what I have done ) Looking very smart, by the way, even without the vest.

I'm still plotting my purchase of a new kilt in Johnstone Weathered, so maybe a bias-cut waistcoat purchased at the same time might be a good idea, unless you think the whole thing might be too muted?
My current kilt is Macpherson Weathered, so the red is light, but somewhat muted.
Oh, and thanks for the compliments!

I agree. Also, as far as fabric choice is concerned, moleskin waistcoats look superb with tweed jackets. I like the mixture of textures with Highland day attire. If you aren't keen on having the self-coloured, plastic buttons on the moleskin waistcoat, you could swap them out for stag horn buttons that coordinate with your tweed jacket.

Very nice tweed Argyll and smartly worn with the brown leather belt. Regarding contrasting waistcoats, here are some visuals to help you out. My view here is that the possibilities are endless.

Claret (note, it was Canada Day so I'm very red and white matchy here - I do like this waistcoat though)

Tartan - not bias cut. Not as popular as bias cut, but I got a lot of compliments that day.

Thats a fine looking jacket and is fine by itself. You can get a variety of waistcoats in solid colors and in tweeds. Whatever you think looks good is likely good.
