Barn fire at my friend's sheep farm.

Several of the kilted photos I have posted here over the last couple years, were taken on my friend Laura DeYoung's "Spicy Lamb Farm", located in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, here in Ohio.

I just got word that this past evening (about 9 hours ago as I write this), a fire broke out in the century-old barn. Laura is out of town (in Washington D.C.) and trying now to get home. I understand that no one was hurt, that the barn was the only structure involved, and that all the animals are ok, but that the barn and everything in it is a total loss.

I ask anyone so inclined say a prayer of thanks that no one was hurt, and for Laura and the kids that they find the help and support they need, to recover and rebuild.

My heart goes out to them. We had the same thing happen to us some thirty years ago and the smell, devastation and the memories are even now oh so clear.

I expect the farming community will all close ranks and help out as best they can, ours certainly did. About a week after our fire where we lost most of our kit, I looked out of the window early one morning and saw tractors ploughing, cultivating and planting the fields, there must have been forty of them(two tractors these days, would cover the same area in the same time for the same result), they just came and did it and they did it for no cost and even to this day I still do not know the names of some of them that helped out, in all honesty we were too surprised to ask. They came, helped and left. Whilst I don't know all of them and never will know, they most certainly are not forgotten.

I hope this wee story helps your friends just a little, at this distressing time.

My story is a rather like Jock's. In the firestorm of 2012, we lost barns, sheds, shops, and the homestead house with over a century of family history. The devastation was very nearly total, with a blanket of black covering some 150,000 acres. I shall never forget the generosity of those who came, some while spot fires were still burning, to help, support and encourage. I trust your friend will have just such help, from just such people.
