    Maori Equivalent

About a year ago a photo appeared in The Press, Christchurch, New Zealand of two people painting a church building on Banks Peninsula, east of the city. The young man is wearing a pair of shorts and a Maori kilt, called a piupiu. The shorts are courtesy of European culture.

Photo below. Sorry, I have lost the name of the Press photographer.

Also here is a website for made to order piupiu (no S in the Maori plural). Anybody game for this garment?

WHAT!!!! What is the world coming too??? How dare men wear skirts. It's just not right. blah, blah, blah........

After looking at the website it is interesting. I have no connection to that culture so I probably wouldn't buy/wear one. Not to mention they are quite costly ($11-14 an inch) being a larger fellow that could get expensive.

I did find it interesting, since we all drool over wool kilts, that the makers of the Piupiu felt the need to mention (a couple of times) that no wool was used in the production of the Piupiu. Apparently they use wool in the cheaper models sold to tourists. Just an interesting factoid I noticed.

It's been a long strange ride so far and I'm not even halfway home yet.

If I was Maori, I would wear it with pride but since I'm not, I don't think I'll be buying one.
