Can anyone tell me about Scrimgeour tartan? I saw a few items made of it, mostly acrylic, I think, even El Cheapo kilts, at the Kansas City Highland Games this past weekend. Both I and the girl friend really liked the look of it.

To my eye, what I saw in KC was more like the image at Lochcarron than the one shown at the Registry.


I think I'd really like a kilt made of it.

The Scrymgeours were the Hereditary Standard Bearers of Scotland.

I'm not sure what's happened to the notes field in the STR entry but they're confused and relate to the Scrimgeour of Glassery version which is a subtle variation of the earlier sett designed in 1971 by Trudi Mann from Caithness, one of the early members of the Scottish Tartans Society. At the 1971 Gathering of the Clans she had a discussion with Sir Ian Moncrieffe whose wife, a Scrymgeour was wearing a checked blouse and her father said he would like a tartan designed to include those colours. The finished tartan was displayed at a gathering of Scrymgeours held at Dudhope Castle, Dundee, in 1971/2 and was later adopted as the official tartan.

The difference in these setting is so subtle that I do not consider them sufficiently different and as a consequence I have removed #3192 from the STA Db.

Can someone help me with the correct pronunciation of Scrymgeour or Scrimgeour?

I've learned Lochcarron is in the process of weaving this tartan, apparently there is only a short length remaining, so maybe I'll do a new kilt.

iSkrim-i-jer or Skrim-jer, I've heard both in Scotland. Basically they are the same but in the second the second 'i' is elided.
