    Sounds familiar

Ever since studying in Edinburgh I've done a lot of dancing in Céilidhean. On the hunt for new melodies on youtube I happened on this one:

    A Frisian "Scotch"

    Sounds familiarly scottish, doesn't it?

As it happens, traditional dance societies in Friesland (are in the north of the Netherlands with their own language and customs) are called "Skotsploech" (Scottish societies)
And there have always been links between Friesland and Scotland, as my family's history demontrates.

Just noting this, in passing. There have been melody books of dancemasters and harmonica players since the 18th century that are filled with "Scots" like this one.

I have to say no - not particularly Scottish, but then I am familiar with English and Scottish folk music.

The one with the fluffy hair is a composer - I know Hey Dushi and Negen Rosen - which are more European in style.

I am always amazed by people who can read music - I have to hear the tune played first to be able to understand the dots on the stave, which rather defeats the objective of written down music.

In Ceilidhs whole collections of melodies are used that come from all over Europe. I always find it interesting that certain dances are spread far and wide. In the Friesland case, the island of Terschelling is a connection: the repertoire there is comparable with what one might encounter at a Ceilidh in Scotland, both dances and music, although at a slower tempo.

My wife teaches music and claims to have people reading musical notation in ten minutes and it's true, she does
