sporran weight?

hey, so i'm not new to wearing kilts, though i've only had one, and i got a sporran to go with it. this was the USA Kilts black leather sporran with a metal celtic spiral thing on the flap. and its always seemed really heavy. does anyone else have this sporran? its just sort of encroaching on my...personal space. are sporrans usually real heavy? again, i've only had one. thanks much.

I, too have the same sporran, and I ordered it from USAKilts. My only problem was that the chain was a bit long and it kept bumping me in a private place. A few snips with the wire cutters solved that problem, and it feels much more natural closer to my belt. I've read that one is supposed to wear the sporran either the width of one hand or of two hands below the belt line. I wear mine about two inches below my belt where it's most comfortable.

Most of the time, I don't bother with a sporran at all. If I want to dress things up a bit I will, but I just find them a hassle. I sometimes wear a "bum bag" instead.

I usually wear one of my sporrans because the wife prefers that look to the fanny pack.

i think fanny packs look very silly, personally. and really, i was just asking about weight. are most sporrans as heavy as that one? the leather seems very heavy.

First, sorry that I didn't directly address the question of weight. I don't think it's that heavy at all. It just seems rather sturdy to me. It merely seemed awkward when it was hanging so low.

Second, I agree with you on the fanny pack thing. Fanny packs are icky and lack character.

My leather ones don't weigh too much empty. But if loaded up with loose change, keys, and other stuff, they can get rather clunky. Casually, I've also worn my sporran off to one side for convenience and comfort. Although if I'm wearing a jacket & tie, the sporran stays up front and center.

Hey Seamus,

The sporrans we sell aren't "light". The leather is a thicker plyable leather and it does have a "good weight" to it. We checked out other sporrans that were lighter, but the quality was just not there (in the same price range as ours). 1 thing you can do to help alleviate the weight is (if you have 1 of our kilts) run the chain through all 3 belt loops, with the sporran hanging properly in front. This keeps the sporran centered and seems to take a little bit of the weight off your back. You may also want to stop carrying bricks in it.

The rob roys that we sell are about the same weight as the Celtic Knots... a LITTLE lighter, but not much. Wearing a sporran takes a little getting used to if you haven't worn them much... it's a new feeling having something with a good amount of weight dangling in front of your crotch... ahahahahaha

I too have that sporran that I bought from Buzz Kidder. I like the heavy weight leather although it took some getting used to the weight of it, and I modified the chain to fit better.

I have the same sporran but with the dragon. I went
to a leather strap which works well. I can
tighten it up to keep the sporran in place.
I also use my kilt belt to secure it, by putting
the sporran belt under the kilt bet. Then I
have to check it every so often. If you look
under Hanks Album you can see a photo of mine
when it is way to low. I had to run around
quite a bit that day. Being 96 degrees and
about 90% humidity, I was trying to stay cool rather
that worrying about my sporran so it drifted down.

I do wish I had belt loops to run the strap through.
I believe that would work quite well.
