leather covered cantle

i was thinking about making a sporran with a leather covered cantle. would this be acceptible and have any of you seen one before? thanks

Leather cantles are very acceptable . They probably aren't seen quite as often as metal cantles on commercial websites , but they are most certainly done and look quite good and they are by no means in the minority .

You can check out Artificer's site on the bottom of this page or Google Artificer sporrans or Ferguson Brit sporrans and you will get some examples .

Here is an example of one of my sporrans with a leather cantle ..... FYI , this is not one of Artificer's or Ferguson Brit's sporrans , just an example of a leather cantle . Also , I use an all leather sporran belt , the chain belt came with the sporran .

This leather cantle'd beauty is an Artificer Sporran - he kindly refurbished my 45yr old piper's sporran by replacing the original silver/white metal thistle motif cantle & bells with this all new leather one. He also changed the horsehair of the tassels to a colour I favoured more than the original white. Needless to say, I like the look of a leather cantle. Especially when the leather itself is as deep in colour and texture and as rich and sumptuous as this. It feels like butter to the hand and is as light as a feather.

Same here! That is, quite possibly, one of my favourite sporrans ever. And he wears it so well!

On the subject of cantles, I have oft wondered why wooden cantles never caught on. I've toyed with the idea of making one, but alas, I have way too many other projects on my plate to ever get to it. But I would think a cantle made from a nice figured wood (I'm thinking curly maple, quilted maple, etc.) would be just smashing. Any ideas as to why the Scots never used wood for cantles on everyday functional sporrans?
