Dalgliesh and Isle of Skye tartan question

I have noticed from browsing the Dalgliesh tartan library that they do not seem to offer the most common version of the Isle of Skye tartan.

Is there a story behind this?

I thought that Dalgliesh was the custom weaver that could do any tartan in any weight so long as it is not restricted (and even then, they can do it if you qualify).

But even under the custom weaves section, the usual Isle of Skye is not listed, when it is listed by other large factory tartan mills.

Anybody know if Dalgliesh can do the usual Isle of Skye tartan?

According to the notes in the Scottish Register of Tartans, the only weaving firm allowed is Lochcarron

When Scotweb uses the abbreviation MARTO to designate a weaving mill, is this some subdivision of Lochcarron then?

Because on this page http://www.scotweb.co.uk/tartan/Isle...le%20of%20skye it would seem to suggest at least one other mill can weave it if MARTO is not the same company. Perhaps I just don't get the abbreviations.

Is this a rather unique situation where a given mill has exclusive weaving rights or is this a common practice?

Just a thought, you could contact the patent holder and ask permision to have it woven by Dalgliesh. I also believe that the Lochcarron stipulation only refers to wool as I am sure that Marton mills does the weave in PV.

In realtion to the MM wool, obviously the patent holder has now given permission for them to weave it. (since the SROT entry came in being)
Mrs Samios does receive a payment of every weave done and I would say, that any mill that is willing to make that payment would be allowed to weave the tartan. In the past she has taken action to stop certain sellers using her design that had used mills other than those she had authorised.

Interesting thought. Thank you for the replies. It is also not intuitive to me that the wording of the listing on the tartan register is implying exclusive access. Perhaps I just am not familiar with UK legalese.

The designer of the tartan has currently stipulated that Lochcarron are the only company licenced to weave it in 100%wool. Marton Mills weave it in wool with a very small addition of artificial fibre and are allowed to do so under licence.

I have an IOS kilt made from MM Jura 16oz fabric, I can't in all honesty tell the difference between the Lochcarron fabric and MM. It has a slightly different hand but I would expect that as it's from two different mills. The benefit for me was that as it was predominantly going to be my walking kilt it is teflon coated so that any mud or stains would be easy to wipe off.
